Ally McCoist and Steven Gerrard have been discussing the Champions League, Newcastle United and Barcelona.
St James’ Park on Tuesday night hosting the first leg, an 8pm kick-off.
Then a 5.45pm start on Wednesday 18 March for Barcelona v Newcastle United in the second leg,
Barcelona looked set to make the final last season, only to finally lose 7-6 to Inter Milan on aggregate in the semi-finals.
Newcastle United returning to the competition after a year’s absence, only the second time in the club’s history they have made the last 16 of the Champions League.
Steven Gerrard and Ally McCoist talking to TNT Sports ahead of Newcastle United v Barcelona in the Champions League last 16:
Presenter:
“Is this [Newcastle v Barcelona] is the most unpredictable of all the [Champions League quarter-final] ties? Because we have seen Barcelona the last two years with knockout matches deep in the competition, where it looks like they have got it won, then somehow they manage to capitulate defensively and then they are out, not making the final. Now Newcastle, you (Ally McCoist) have made the point that they could score multiple goals in the first leg at St James’ Park and over there.”
Ally McCoist:
“I would yeah, but I don’t think it is the most unpredictable of ties, because sadly for Newcastle I think Barcelona will win the tie. I think Newcastle won’t go through. I hope I am wrong, clearly I want Newcastle to get through, but I can’t see it.”
Presenter:
“You couldn’t see any other outcome than Barcelona winning by about six goals against Inter. Then when you looked at the final, Inter Milan were there, Barcelona weren’t, because they have got that Achilles heel. Everybody is up on the halfway line, you can score against them.”
“I think that will hurt them (Barcelona) further on. I really like Eddie Howe, a massive fan of his. A big fan of Newcastle as well. But I just think Barcelona have got too much firepower.”
