Currently Newcastle United Head of Recruitment, Steve Nickson is now set to join Wrexham as their new Sporting Director.
After 15 years with NUFC, Steve Nickson’s departure had been reported for some time, just a case of which club it would be.
Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson said to have decided on changes to the recruitment set up that he oversees.
BBC Sport now saying that their information is that Steve Nickson will start at Wrexham in September, with a title of Sporting Director. With West Ham having also been interested in appointing him.
The BBC Sport update stating: ‘Wrexham believe the move represents a next-level appointment as the club bids to bolster its hopes of reaching the Premier League. Nickson – who was also pivotal when Newcastle broke their transfer record to sign Miguel Almiron in 2019 – spent 15 years with the Magpies and will work closely with manager Phil Parkinson in his new position. Manager Parkinson has regularly been kept updated of developments on the pursuit of Nickson and is expected to fully utilise the former Newcastle chief’s wealth of experience. His exact duties have not yet been confirmed, although Nickson is expected to be involved in a mixture of transfer activity and wider football operations.’
There had been previous media claims that Steve Nickson was working his notice at Newcastle United, though not clear whether he was still actively working at NUFC or on gardening leave.
Joining Wrexham after the current transfer window sounds a logical plan.
BBC Sport adding: ‘The recruitment chief – who played a key role in Joelinton’s £40m switch to St James’ Park from Hoffenheim in 2019 in addition to that of Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in 2022.’
