Tuesday afternoon has now brought the breaking news that Newcastle United have reached agreement with Manchester City on the transfer fee to sign Nico Gonzalez.
The very reliable David Ornstein and Chris Waugh at The Athletic say that a £52m deal has been agreed between the two clubs.
They state that it is a fixed guaranteed £48m plus up to £4m more in potential future add-ons.
Nico Gonzalez set to be the seventh Newcastle United signing of the summer.
The Athletic report saying that Manchester City have given Nico Gonzalez permission to travel to Tyneside for his medical.
On Saturday it was reported that Manchester City had told Nico Gonzalez he could leave, the Etihad club understood to have been keeping hold of the Spanish midfielder until they had at least one of their midfield targets over the line.
On Sunday, Man City did indeed land one of their key targets, a deal worth 100m euros (£85.6m) to sign 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. Manchester City having been kept waiting but Bouaddi now set to complete his protracted move to England with Lille accepting an initial fee of £81.4m, plus £4.2m in add-ons.
Nico Gonzalez signed for Man City 18 months ago and started nine of their final 14 Premier League matches that 2024/25 season. Last season the midfielder made 25 Premier League appearances, starting 17 and off the bench in another eight.
Signed for £52m (the same amount as what Newcastle United are said to have agreed to pay) from Porto at the start of February 2025, the now 24-year-old midfielder made 41 Manchester City appearances (all competitions) in total the last season and a half.
The £52m transfer will take the figure beyond £230m for the seven Newcastle United summer signings (so far) once Nico Gonzalez completes his move.
