Welcome to day fourteen of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group automatically going through and the eight best performing teams who finish third in their groups.
So only 16 of the 48 countries will be knocked out after the 72 group games have all played out, with the other 32 teams going through to the knockout stages.
We have now reached a point where we are now two-thirds of the way through the 72 group games with 48 played. That means 56 games in total still to go when you include the knockout stages.
Wednesday now sees the acceleration of the process with the start of the third round group games and all four teams in a group playing at the same time.
The latest quartet of matches saw Portugal kick things off with a 5-0 hammering of Uzbekistan and Ronaldo scoring twice. The Portuguese bouncing back from a really poor opening draw against DR Congo when they lacked attacking intent after scoring early. Their second group match very different though.
Sadly, this is where the goals and entertainment pretty much dried up as negative tactics came to the fore and little imagination to break the opposition down.
The other Group K match early Wednesday (UK time) saw Colombia need a deflected 76th minute effort to beat Yoane Wissa and DR Congo. Colombia progress with six points from two games but DR Congo know that a win against Uzbekistan will all but guarantee progress for them with four points.
England lacked courage and imagination in a very poor 0-0 against a negative Ghana side. However, the few times Ghana did get near the England goal they almost caused an upset, with Konsa very lucky not to give away a penalty and Pickford avoiding a red card when recklessly running out of his penalty area and bringing the opposition player down. Very fortunate that the referee and VAR sided with England both times.
The other Group L match then saw Panama and Croatia play out a woeful game that only saw three efforts on target in total (only four in England v Ghana). Croatia scoring with one of their two efforts on target.
Panama are now out of the tournament ahead of facing England on Saturday, Tuchel’s team effectively through already on four points and the same with Ghana. Croatia could go through with three points but a point against Ghana on Saturday would probably make sure of it.
It is now 141 goals in 48 matches and this 2026 World Cup no longer on track to average three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup. The closest was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.93 goals per game after the opening 48 matches.
