Rafa Benitez or Sean Dyche to replace Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle United?

So then, who is it to be, is it Rafa Benitez or Sean Dyche to replace Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle United?

No, Newcastle United haven’t got rid of their Head Coach, at least not yet.

Although clearly there appears to be plenty of Newcastle United fans who would like that to happen. Today, if not earlier.

There is though of course only one small problem.

If Matthias Jaissle was to leave, then Newcastle United would need a new Head Coach.

It is all very well screaming for the man in charge to go but you have to then have a succession plan.

Yes, I know that wouldn’t be your job, your are just a fan, but careful what you wish for.

Having a look at what happened last season, maybe it is little wonder that as yet, Matthias Jaissle and the other 19 Premier League managers remain in their jobs still in 2026-27.

In total, eleven Premier League managers were sacked during last season (with their replacements in brackets), with seven of the Premier League managers to be sacked during the 2025-26 season exiting from only three clubs!

9 September 2025 – Nuno leaves Forest (Ange Postecoglou)
27 September 2025 – Graham Potter leaves West Ham (Nuno)
18 October 2025 – Ange Postecoglou leaves Forest (Sean Dyche)
2 November 2025 – Vitor Pereira leaves Wolves (Rob Edwards)
1 January 2026 – Enzo Maresca leaves Chelsea (Liam Rosenior)
5 January 2026 – Ruben Amorim leaves Man U (Michael Carrick)
11 February 2026 – Thomas Frank leaves Spurs (Igor Tudor)
12 February 2026 – Sean Dyche leaves Forest (Vitor Pereira)
29 March 2026 – Igor Tudor leaves Spurs (Roberto de Zerbi)
22 April 2026 – Liam Rosenior leaves Chelsea (Caretaker boss for rest of season)
30 April 2026 – Scott Parker leaves Burnley (Caretaker boss for rest of season)

The ridiculous Forest owner actually got in even quicker this time and sacked the manager (Pereira) before this 2026-27 season even started! Their fifth manager in less than 14 months, Oliver Glasner, currently only has Sunderland to thank for keeping him and Forest off rock bottom.

Oliver Glasner of course was somebody that so many Newcastle United fans were thinking would be a great choice for NUFC not so long ago.

Well I suppose at least we won’t need to wait too long before Glasner is back on the market judging by the way the Forest owner happily swings the axe.

Seriously though, who would Newcastle United get if they moved Matthias Jaissle on in the near future?

I hear Newcastle United fans saying that it was obvious that in the summer NUFC shouldn’t have gone for somebody who has no Premier League experience.

Well just have a look at what happened last season as I have listed above, so many managers with Premier League experience getting hired and fired.

If Matthias Jaissle was sacked, I think Sean Dyche or similar would be the kind of Premier League experience that would be available and keen on the job.

Sean Dyche was dismissed by Everton on 9 January 2025 when they were only one point above the relegation zone, having only won three of their last nineteen games in the 2024–25 season.

On 21 October 2025, Sean Dyche was appointed as manager of Nottingham Forest and lasted less then four months, Dyche sacked in February 2026 having won six of his 18 Premier League games in charge at the City Ground and Forest fourth bottom.

Rafa Benitez is another name I have seen mentioned.

Nobody loves Rafa Benitez more than me and he deserves our everlasting love and respect for what he did when the evil on owned Newcastle United. He gave us hope when there was none and did a brilliant job.

The curse of NUFC appears to have drained his magic though.

The managerial career of Rafa Benitez has been a total car crash in the seven years since Mike Ashley forced him out.  Disasters at Dalian Professional, Everton, Celta Vigo and Panathinaikos. Not quite the career progression that preceded Newcastle United, when Rafa went Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli, Real Madrid…

The idea that Rafa Benitez would suddenly rediscover his magic wand if returning to St James’ Park is simple fantasy, though not fantasy football.

This isn’t to say that Matthias Jaissle shouldn’t be sacked, he hasn’t got a job for life.

However, to only give him nine Premier League matches after he walked into a club in total chaos 18 days before the season kicked off.

Well, it isn’t my idea of a clever move and that is even before you begin to look at the very likely potential replacements.
