Alan Hutton has been talking about the potential move of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United to Tottenham.
It is now a week and a half since the interest from Spurs was first reported.
The media appear to universally believe that talks have taken place between Tottenham and Newcastle United.
However, whilst some journalists have claimed that an opening offer in the region of £75m-£80m has been rejected by United, others in the media simply reporting advanced talks have happened.
Alan Sutton giving his view: “I just really like Sandro Tonali. He’s like a silky Italian player that you used to see from years gone by. Everything comes very easy to him, his first touch is absolutely quality. Does he make Tottenham better? Yes I think he does. I think he’s got that quality to kinda kick them on.”
The former Scotland and Tottenham player accepts that the fact his old club have been fighting relegation the last two years doesn’t help their appeal to new signings.
Spurs having finished fourth bottom of the Premier League in 2024/25 and 2025/26.
Alan Hutton admitting to Betarades: “The problem, I think, with Tottenham at this moment in time is that the seasons that they’ve had, they’ve not been a stable club. There’s been a lot of turnover in terms of managers and everything going in the background. Daniel Levy stepping down. There’s been a lot of noise and the fans are unhappy as well. That’s the kind of situation they’re in. Because of everything that surrounds the club, when other big teams like Arsenal or whoever it may be are trying to get the same player, I think it’s always going to be difficult for Tottenham. There’s a lot of uncertainty that kind of surrounds the club. The positions that they finished in the last couple of years.”
It does appear to be the case that Newcastle United are willing to sell if any club meets their asking price, believed to be up around the £100m mark.
Alan Hutton now worried that big clubs could get involved and prove more attractive than Tottenham to Sandro Tonali: “I think that’s probably what has been missing, leaders and quality, especially in the middle of the pitch where a guy who can get on the ball and make something happen. I think Tonali would be a great signing. Do I believe they can get it done? I’m 50-50 on that. If other big clubs are involved, I think it’s troublesome.”
