The culmination of a successful development path for the 20-year-old goalkeeper, who has become one of the most promising last lines of defence in French football. When Stade de Reims signed the young Breton goalkeeper in the summer of 2023, the plan was clear: to guide him to the highest level. After the first half of the season with the reserve team, the club allowed him to continue his development through loan spells designed to give him playing time and experience. Playing for Rodez AF, Ewen, at 18, became the youngest starting goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues and their second divisions. The following season, at Dunkerque, he continued his progress, experiencing the major stages of professional football, including a French Cup semi-final and the promotion playoffs to Ligue 1.’

Reims is the unofficial capital of the Champagne region.

A ‘Champagne’ moment now for the young up and coming star as he joins Newcastle United…The football club going on to say about Ewen Jaouen and his development: ‘The rest is history. In his first season as number one at Stade de Reims, Ewen impressed with his reflex saves, composure on the ball, and remarkable maturity. With 15 clean sheets, he achieved the best record in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 combined and came close to equaling the record of another illustrious goalkeeper who rose to prominence at Reims, Edouard Mendy. This stellar season earned him his first start for the French U21 team, a fitting reward for a career already marked by appearances at every youth level. In Reims, Ewen will be remembered as a talented goalkeeper, but also as a man passionate about football and deeply committed to his young players at AS Gueux, whom he coached several times a week and accompanied on weekends to matches throughout the region, whenever his sporting commitments allowed. A few days before his departure, the children came to send him a final message and share a special moment with him at the Raymond Kopa Community Centre.’

Stade de Reims also pointing out where this places Ewen Jaouen when it comes to transfer fees paid for a goalkeeper.

The club revealing: ‘This transfer, which places Ewen in the Top 15 most valuable goalkeepers in football history, rewards both the talent of a player and the work of an entire Club driven by the desire to reveal talent, to support them in their progress and to allow them to reach the biggest European stages. Stade de Reims warmly thanks Ewen for his commitment to the Red and White colours and wishes him all the best for this new adventure in the Premier League, which they will follow with the greatest attention.’

Ewen Jaouen having this to say himself about the move to United: “I am really excited to become a Newcastle United player. When I visited the training ground, I could see how passionate everyone is about the club and the work they do, and I loved the environment straight away. I also had the chance to see the stadium and it’s huge.”

Ewen Jaouen adding: “I’ve heard so much about the supporters and how they are the best in the country. The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St James’ Park are famous throughout football, and I can’t wait to experience that for myself and become a true Geordie. As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one on one situations and playing as a modern keeper, building from the back and being comfortable with the ball at my feet. Now I want to develop alongside the amazing players and staff here, enjoy my football, and prove my value on the pitch.”
