Everton fans commenting via their Grand Old Team message board after drawing Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup:
‘Arguably the biggest cup game to date at the hill Dickinson.’
‘Liverpool getting Chelsea made that draw more palatable
Yep, few decent teams out already.
You never know…’
‘Lots of potential bearable teams in the next round too, glad we have a squad big enough to compete on multiple fronts.’
‘I am sure the barcodes are not happy drawing us at our place’
‘Could’ve been better could’ve been worse.’
‘Could have been much worse, confident.’
‘A home draw and play our strongest team and we could be in the quarter finals. The first part of the owners requirement of Moyes – ‘go deep in the cups quarter finals or better’ – will be complete.’
‘Beat Newcastle, beat Bradford in the QF, beat Bournemouth in the semi final, beat Fulham in the final.’
‘i’m all for ending our trophy drought but not with a run like this
like when leicester finally got into the champions league and their biggest opponenet was atletico, bit underwhelming
same reason arsenal didnt get the champions league last year, their was no narrative in thart run, they just beat a load of chumps.’
‘ don’t think I’d be in anyway bit bothered while at Wembley celebrating our first trophy since 1995. I wouldn’t be going it’s good but we only beat Preston, Wolves, Newcastle etc on the way.
Do you watch the cup draw hoping for the hardest team away?’
‘….the further you go in this comp, the more serious European competition gets for the big hitters so you always have a chance, especially given a home draw.
Newcastle at home is certainly winnable, think Brighton or Brentford would be arguably more difficult.
Good chance of progression, one game at a time.’
‘We would need a bit of luck should we get into the QF. You need the big teams drawn against each other and to try and avoid one of them till as late as possible.
For me it’s only a cup run if you get to the final. At least that is a one off game and you have a punchers chance if you approach in it the right way.
Newcastle is a tough draw but very winnable at home.’
‘We will have a 1 day rest advantage because we play earlier the weekend before. We also play them again away on the Monday night after.
‘We thinking it’ll be Wednesday or Thursday of that week then.
I mean why did the Newcastle League go Monday night anyway, Liverpool play Sunday and Newcastle don’t have any cup games
Edit: Newcastle got league game on Sunday 25th, so likely Wednesday/Thursday.’
‘We thinking it’ll be Wednesday or Thursday of that week then?’
‘Could be either yeah. If sky are looking a Thursday night game then this one would make sense and puts no one at a disadvantage.’
‘As draws go, we can’t complain here.
At home, against the horse punchers.
UTFT!’
‘At this stage any Home draw is a big bonus.’
‘Liverpool at home Sunday and then following Sunday, chelski play both Saturdays, so likely their fixture will be Wednesday.’
‘So probably Arsenal away Sat, horse punchers Tue, then away to them Monday.’
‘I dont think it will be Tuesday. I think Newcastle play the Sunday the weekend before.’
‘Could be either yeah. If sky are looking a Thursday night game then this one would make sense and puts no one at a disadvantage.’
‘Liverpool Chelsea only fits Wednesday, we will be Thursday. Newcastle play the previous sunday so can’t do Tuesday.’
‘It’s the kind of match that will ensure a decent atmosphere
At home against the horse punchers, I’ll take that.’
‘Really?
I really do hope our fans turn up for that one. It was like a morgue against Wolves. It reminded me of the final few seasons at Goodison.’
‘Tougher draw, going to have to best some decent teams if we want to have a hope of winning it…
Home draw is a big plus.
Yes a tougher draw.’
‘They lost badly at Leeds but put spuds to the sword 2-0 away…unlike us.’
‘Early round in the league cup against a championship team, the atmosphere is only going to be bouncing if the team are playing electric football or it’s a fiery end to end game with tackles flying in
There’s always a bit of edge to a game against Newcastle and we’re another step closer to a trip to Wembley… it’ll be good.’
‘I must say, this competition is looking promising this season.
Away to a poor Championship team; then at home to one looking more for immediate promotion back up; now a home game against a Newcastle team struggling to come to terms with what a new manager wants of them.
A QF draw at home after that and we can start dreaming.’
