Sporting Braga on their official social media putting out this classy and amusing farewell message about their departing keeper: “From now on, Newcastle it’s the safest city in England.”
The Portuguese club also revealing the exact transfer fee: ‘SC Braga has reached an agreement with Newcastle United (England) for the permanent transfer of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek for a fee of €30.578 million.’ the exchange rate, €30.578 million equated to around £26.2m.
Lukas Hornicek on joining Newcastle United: “The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move and now I’m so happy to be here. It’s a brilliant opportunity in a new league, which I’m very excited about. From the very first moment I arrived here, I received a fantastic welcome and really felt the warmth of the club. Everyone has been brilliant in helping me settle in. I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St. James’ Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can’t wait to play in front of them.”
Matthias Jaissle was officially confirmed as the new Newcastle United Head Coach two days later on Wednesday 5 August.
Less than six weeks later, we already know a lot more about the new Head Coach and the new first choice goalkeeper.
Newcastle United still unbeaten and after starting four of the five matches played so far, Lukas Hornicek has already kept two clean sheets.
Ahead of Leeds United away on Monday night, Matthias Jaissle has been talking about his first choice goalkeeper: “An amazing job so far. Amazing signing, a young lad as well and not easy coming into the Premier League and performing already on a high level and dealing with the pressure. As a keeper it is something else as well, so we are really pleased and we hope that he can progress in the same way. I like him a lot as he’s so calm, but so mature as well. He gives the whole team this confidence, having someone between the posts with that confidence and also showing it. There is not even a sign of nervousness, so that helps a lot.”
For Newcastle United fans, plenty to like about both Lukas Hornicek and Matthias Jaissle on what we have witnessed so far. Hopefully a case of another clean sheet and win tonight at Elland Road, keeping this excellent start to the season going.
