Easter Sunday and it is a family get together in Peckham, a whole roast salmon then traditional roast lamb with all the trimmings and ridiculous amounts of chocolate eggs.
The mother in law is a big Arsenal fan, as are the fellas in her family.
As I arrive I cannot resist the opening line of “quadruple not looking too good…”
Proper football banter, we all love it.
Back at the end of September, me and the lad had bagged our first tickets through the ballot and for some reason ended up first class on the train from London, with a bunch of Prada and Paul Smith clad old boy Gooners.
Back then, they reckoned Mikel Arteta was due the chop and fully expected it if they didn’t beat Newcastle United on that day.
Fast forward to my Easter afternoon in Peckham.
And of course it is time to discuss football with my kid’s big uncle Kilechi who was born and grew up around Highbury.
As an Arsenal fan, Kilechi has never had time for Arteta and has seen through his shenanigans, he is frankly embarrassed by him and his post-match comments.
Kilechi managed to get tickets to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final and as he described his day, I could see from his body language that he was so gutted by what he had seen in the clueless performance by his team.
He struggled to put into words his feelings from the nature of the defeat. The fact that it was Manchester City adds to the story, as he is well aware that Arsenal have bankrolled Arteta and given him the ammunition for a serious Premier League campaign, but then plays such negative football relying so overwhelmingly on set-pieces.
I rib him by saying we will take three points off them in a few weeks but he actually doesn’t doubt that will happen. He genuinely believes that Arsenal will not win the league and their current nine point gap is not enough.
His fear is that if they do not win the league, what will the people in charge do?
They have given Mikel Arteta the funds to create champions. He has been given time. He has not delivered. Where do they go?
After that heavy football discussion, where better to go than the sitting room to watch the afternoon entertainment of the West Ham versus Leeds FA Cup game. An alternative to stop thinking about our clubs and also have a laugh at the plight of Spurs.
