How is this Newcastle United squad shaping up for the 2026/27 season?

The transfer window closes for Premier League clubs tomorrow.

It is an 11pm deadline on Tuesday (1 September 2026)

night and will there be any more significant exits and/or incomings for this Newcastle United squad?

Newcastle United players who have exited following the end of last season:

Kieran Trippier, John Ruddy, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, Aaron Ramsdale, Harrison Ashby (loan), Anthony Gordon, Odysseas Vlachodimos (loan), Alex Murphy (loan), Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Joe White

A dozen players leaving who have previously played for the first team, some more than others.

Seven Newcastle United signings made so far this summer, all of them aged 24 or younger:

Sean Steur (18), Bazoumana Toure (20), Aladji Bamba (20), Ewen Jaouen (20), Lukas Hornicek (24), Amar Dedic (24) and Nico Gonzalez (24).

So is this Newcastle United squad now fit for purpose, to take on the rest of the 2026/27 challenge that awaits them?

The 2026/27 Newcastle United squad as things stand (31 August 2026):

I make that four goalkeepers, three full-backs, four centre-backs, seven midfielders, four wingers, three strikers.

That gives a Newcastle United squad of 25 players.

However, we know Nick Pope will almost surely leave, whilst Mark Gillespie will be the third goalkeeper.

The numbers above suggest 21 outfield players, which sounds enough, but I think we all accept at least one (hopefully two) signings most definitely needed before the window closes at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September 2026.

Media claims in France that Newcastle United are close to agreeing a deal for 21-year-old attacker Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille, whilst at the same time clubs in Germany and Italy said to be keen to take Nick Woltemade on loan. My gut feeling is that either both of these deals will happen or neither.

As for any other players in and out, possibly a similar story. As in, very likely that other incomings depending on offers for current NUFC players.

We all know it is very early days but certainly this opening week of the season and the three performances and results have given all of us a far better feeling about how the season could play out. These games also maybe convincing Matthias Jaissle and Ross Wilson (and the fans) that somebody like Joe Willock could be worth holding onto, whereas before the season kicked off it felt like the fanbase collectively were all waving him goodbye with a move to Turkey seemingly set to happen.

The media had claimed Besiktas were prepared to pay around £10m for Joe Willock whilst Newcastle United looking for closer to £20m. With the huge UEFA SCR concerns it is a simple fact that Newcastle United have to be very careful when it comes to balancing deals in and out. So selling a player who could get plenty of first team minutes this season for NUFC, leave for an amount that wouldn’t be a big enough help in terms of affording a replacement, I can’t see that happening.

There had been similar claims in the media about Jacob Murphy potentially leaving and Everton amongst clubs who are interested. This is another one I think where United will only let Murphy go if getting a decent offer that will help bring in his replacement.

Nico Gonzalez was of course the huge signing that Newcastle United needed and for him to contribute what he did at Tottenham in that huge win, what an instant impact!

I think Hornicek, Dedic and Gonzalez have already fitted in so well. Whilst Sean Steur has also been very good but aged only 18 and so few games behind him, he needs looked after. The trio of 20-year-olds maybe taking a little while longer before ready for the major challenges, I am looking forward to seeing what Toure and Aladji can bring to the Newcastle United squad and Jaouen as well.

Those inside the club will of course as well know far more than us about Joelinton, Tino Livramento, William Osula and Dan Burn, what their injury/recovery status is and whether that could maybe have an impact on the final hours of the transfer window.

As for younger players who were already at the club, I think Leo Shahar is the one who is most forward in his progress and if not going out on loan, could be the one to get decent first team minutes this season. Sean Neave (and others) maybe needing a bit more time and almost certainly first team football at a lower level out on loan.

I am feeling really positive though with this Newcastle United squad after watching on this past week and there is clear potential there that this could prove a far better season than many of us feared.

Of course, one or two further positive signings won’t do any harm…
