The question I am asking myself today is…Are Newcastle United fans really this fickle?
Naturally, I am not talking about all of you.
At the same time though, there do appear to be plenty of them out there.
When using the word “Fickle” I was pretty sure I did know what it meant, but for perfect clarity, I looked up the exact definition.
“Fickle describes someone (or something) likely to change their mind, loyalty, or affections suddenly and without good reason, indicating inconsistency or instability. It is often used to describe disloyal friends, unpredictable weather, or shifting public opinion.”
When bringing up “Fickle” as a word to describe certain Newcastle United fans, I need to make clear what I actually mean.
I am not talking about all Newcastle United fans who see things differently to me.
My belief is that Eddie Howe and his team/squad have faced an all but impossible task this season, far too many matches and far too few players to be able to cope with the schedule. A 2025/26 season that was totally undermined last summer by Alexander Isak and the Newcastle United owners, who made a complete hash of dealing with the Isak situation and failed totally when it came to getting in the manager’s top targets, plus the incomings that did happen came in far too late.
Any Newcastle United fans who don’t agree with me, who might argue for example that a change of manager should happen now, I am not talking about you/them. Everybody can have an opinion, it would be boring and surreal if we all thought exactly the same.
When it comes to “Fickle”, I am talking about a particular sub-section amongst the Newcastle United fans who think differently to me.
Those NUFC supporters who I feel totally ashamed of.
Imagine if you were a Newcastle fan who after the 2024/25 season ended, immediately departed from these shores and went somewhere for the next 11 months where you had no contact with the outside world, so you knew nothing about what was happening back home, nor what was being said.
Then imagine that you are suddenly back on Tyneside today and catching up on everything, finding out what has been happening AND what Newcastle United fans are saying.
I think you would be bewildered and completely shocked by the way these fickle Newcastle United fans are going on, the way they talk about the manager and players who have given us so much.
The abuse from some of these characters that is aimed at Eddie Howe and many of these Newcastle United players is simply appalling.
Eddie Howe is an idiot. Players aren’t trying. Players are faking injuries. Players are desperate to leave. Players have no respect for the club or the fans.
The way these Newcastle United fans go on, it is a miracle that Eddie Howe and these players ever won a single game, never mind the fact that these very same people have performed minor (and major!) miracles against the odds in recent years, never mind cup finals, Champions League qualifications, a trophy.
Many of the same Newcastle United fans who wanted a statue of Eddie Howe to be put in place outside of St James’ Park, would now be dragging it down and smashing it up, as though it was a cruel despot dictator who had finally been deposed.
Remember…
“Fickle describes someone (or something) likely to change their mind, loyalty, or affections suddenly and without good reason, indicating inconsistency or instability. It is often used to describe disloyal friends, unpredictable weather, or shifting public opinion.”
