Welcome to day thirteen of the 2026 World Cup finals.

We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.

There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.

The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group automatically going through and the eight best performing teams who finish third in their groups.

So only 16 of the 48 countries will be knocked out after the 72 group games have all played out, with the other 32 teams going through to the knockout stages.

We have now reached a point where we are more than halfway through the 72 group games with 44 played. That means 60 games in total still to go when you include the knockout stages.

Wednesday sees the acceleration of the process with the start of the third round group games and all four teams in a group playing at the same time.

The last 24 hours have seen France, Argentina and Norway all guarantee their progress to the knockout stages.

Lionel Messi lighting up an otherwise boring match that eventually ended 2-0 for Argentina over Austria. Missing an early penalty following a dubious VAR spot-kick award, Messi then scored an excellent team goal on 38 minutes as he became the all-time record World Cup finals goalscorer. Argentina then sat back the rest of the match and Austria totally blunt in terms of attacking threat, Lionel Messi scoring late in added time to move further ahead as the new all-time goalscorer at the World Cup.

In the other Group J match Algeria came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1. With Argentina guaranteed to finish top of the group, it means Austria and Algeria will fight it out for second place when they play each other, both on three points after two games.

Very much like the Argentina match, France scored early on through Mbappe (on 14 minutes) and then showed little urgency to score more against a limited Iraq side. Arguably the biggest excitement was the weather, torrential rain and lightning in the area leading to a two hour gap between the first and second halves. Mbappe added his and France’s second goal when play eventually restarted and Dembele adding a third to see France cruise to qualification.

A far better match saw Norway eventually win 3-2 against Senegal. An entertaining and high quality match seeing Erling Haaland score twice. Norway on six points and now qualified for the last 32, whilst they will face France in their final group game to decide who tops their group.

Senegal looking a little unlucky to have zero points after two very decent performances against France and Norway, the African team still potentially could progress as one of the best eight of twelve performing third place teams, though they may need to score a fair few goals against Iraq to do so in their final group game.

It is now 134 goals in 44 matches and this 2026 World Cup still on track to average three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup. The closest was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 3.04 goals per game after the opening 44 matches.
