Welcome to day 21 of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
We were left with 32 countries for the knockouts after 16 were eliminated in the group stage.
The 16 eliminated at the end of the group stage were: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Uzbekistan, Scotland, Iran and South Korea.
Now you can add Sweden, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, South Africa. Netherlands, Germany and Japan to that list.
An entertaining match saw Ivory Coast and Norway create plenty of chances and it could easily have been 4-3 or 5-4. Ivory Coast were definitely the better team in the opening half but failed to take advantage, then six minutes before the break a brilliant curling finish from Nusa put Norway ahead. Amad Diallo came off the bench and scored a superb solo goal to equalise, then with both teams going for it up popped Haaland to score the winner four minutes from time. He actually didn’t connect properly and with the goal gaping the fear on his face was a picture but relief in the end as the keeper still couldn’t reach it.
France then simply blew Sweden away. It was 3-0 by the final whistle but could and should have been at least six or seven. France have got so many brilliant options going forward and two of them scored the three goals (Mbappe with two and Barcola the other) and another two of the quality attacking options laid on the goals (two assists for Olise and one for Dembele). If France keep on playing like this then they win the World Cup for sure, can Miguel Almiron and Paraguay stop them…?
Co-hosts Mexico took full advantage of their earned ongoing home advantage. Two up against Ecuador inside 31 minutes at the Azteca Stadium and they cruised the remainder of the match.
So that means seven of the sixteen matches in the round of 32 are now completed, nine to go.
Up next is England who play at 5pm today and if they get through against DR Congo, they will play against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in the last 16. Not getting too far ahead but as per the schedule below, if England get past DR Congo and Mexico they would play the winners of Brazil v Norway in the quarter-finals.
It is now 231 goals in 79 matches and this 2026 World Cup not far short of averaging three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup but the chances of it happening are now disappearing in the knockout stages. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.92 goals per game after the first 79 matches. There are now 25 games left to play (including the third-place play-off match).
Here are the last 32 results and details of the next upcoming knockout games to be played, all kick-offs are shown as UK times and with the channel that is showing them.
