Welcome to day 22 of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
We were left with 32 countries for the knockouts after 16 were eliminated in the group stage.
The 16 eliminated at the end of the group stage were: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Uzbekistan, Scotland, Iran and South Korea.
Now you can add DR Congo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, Sweden, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, South Africa. Netherlands, Germany and Japan to that list as 10 of the 16 matches in the round of 32 have been played. Still six spots to fill in the last 16.
England made hard work of it as you will all know and if Yoane Wissa had hit the back of the net rather than the post just before half-time, at 2-0 down it would have been a long way back for Thomas Tuchel’s team. They did improve to an extent as the second half went on and the opposition tired but the introduction of Anthony Gordon helped turn it around. An excellent cross gave Harry Kane a sitter to head home from. However, whilst Gordon passed again for the second, this time it was Kane when it came to the winner, making room and lashing it past the keeper into the roof of the net. Mexico will host England in the last 16, a 1am (UK time) clash on Monday morning.
Belgium have been anything but impressive this World Cup and yet now find themselves in the last 16. After 85 minutes they were deservedly exiting the competition with Senegal 2-0 but then out of nowhere two goals in four minutes got them to extra-time. A Tielemans penalty five minutes into added time at the end of extra-time saw Belgium somehow progress.
Facing Belgium in the last 16 will be the USA. All three of the co-hosts are now into the last 16 and the USA did it comfortably despite having a man sent off. Balogun gave them a deserved lead just before the break but then 20 minutes into the second half he looked a little unlucky to get a red card. Despite being a man down, the USA still the better team against a poor Bosnia and Herzegovina and well worth their eventual 2-0 win after adding a second eight minutes from time.
The remaining six vacancies in the last 16 will be filled by the end of Friday night (UK time).
It is now 241 goals in 82 matches and this 2026 World Cup not far short of averaging three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup but the chances of it happening are now reducing in the knockout stages. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.94 goals per game after the first 82 matches. There are now 22 games left to play (including the third-place play-off match).
Here are the last 32 results and details of the next upcoming knockout games to be played, all kick-offs are shown as UK times and with the channel that is showing them.
