Newcastle United chief David Hopkinson has been talking about the club’s approach to the transfer market.

As always, the media pumping out story after story claiming any number of Newcastle United players will sign for other clubs this summer.

The reality of course is that despite this talk every single transfer window, Alexander Isak is the only key player who has chosen to leave Newcastle United during the nine windows of the Eddie Howe era and current club ownership.

Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson now entering the debate: “We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer. But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we’re going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club. Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well.”

Alexander Isak was bought by Liverpool for £130m on 1 September 2025.

Three days later on 4 September 2025, David Hopkinson was named as the new Newcastle United CEO.

David Hopkinson now describing that as a “good sale”, Newcastle United selling Alexander Isak for that amount to Liverpool.

It broke all previous records for a Premier League club buying a player and then with Alexander Isak having a disastrous first season at Liverpool, it makes that transfer fee look even more stupendous.

However, with the Newcastle United owners refusing to sell Alexander Isak until the very final day of the summer 2025 transfer window, it totally wrecked the chances of Eddie Howe preparing properly for what was always going to be a huge 2025/26 season challenge.

Five of the six eventual summer 2025 signings had no pre-season with their new teammates, and the chaos and late Alexander Isak sale was a key factor in Eddie Howe not getting his striker replacements for Callum Wilson and Isak, until well after the season had kicked off. Never mind having an NUFC pre-season of preparation.

David Hopkinson asked if his comments about player trading and buying and selling well, then meant one or more key players could be sold this summer.

The Newcastle United CEO stating: “We are not ready to answer that. We have got to see what set-up we are in and what opportunities present themselves in the market place. What I will say is that we intend to be disciplined, active, thoughtful and as proactive as we possibly can…”
