Fabian Schar has been reliving his injury nightmare.

The Newcastle United defender talking to Swiss media.

An injury against Leeds doing the damage in January 2026.

Fabian Schar stretchered off with a serious ankle injury.

That injury marring a superb 4-3 Newcastle comeback win over Leeds.

Fabian Schar telling Blick: “I knew straight away that it was serious. I had several torn ligaments in my ankle and the doctors had to reconstruct five ligaments.”

The United star going on to explain how things took a sudden turn for the worst three months later: “About three months after [the Leeds match], I was ready to return and wanted to train with the team again. But then I suddenly developed a serious infection, for which I had emergency surgery. This really affected me. A wound didn’t heal completely and became severely infected. Within a few hours my foot swelled up and was full of pus. As they wanted to prevent blood poisoning, it was clear that emergency surgery was unavoidable.”

Fabian Schar was one of many excellent Rafa Benitez signings, a contract clause allowing NUFC to buy the Switzerland international for only £3.5m in summer 2018.

The classy defender explaining though how bad things got when he was trying to recover earlier this year when complications set in: “It was about my health and my career and it was probably the most challenging period of my entire career. I have had several injuries before but there was usually a clear path to recovery. Under such circumstances it is easier to accept it. For about four weeks I had to go to the hospital every day to receive antibiotics. After that, I took tablets regularly. Unfortunately, I also developed a blood clot. Everything went wrong at once. They inserted a valve in my upper arm so that the medication wouldn’t have to be injected into a vein each time. The clot formed there, which is why I had to take more medication for another six weeks. Mentally it was a huge challenge.”

Thankfully a full recovery for Fabian Schar and he could be a key figure this coming season as one of the experienced players in the Newcastle United squad.
