‘We are ready to fight for everything’ Yoane Wissa

The versatile attacking player had previously played all across the frontline including when at Brentford, it was only when Ivan Toney was unavailable due to his gambling ban and then leaving the Bees, that Yoane Wisse then played regularly as the main striker.

In what proved to be his final season at Brentford, Yoane Wissa scored 19 Premier League goals as a centre-forward, the most of any top tier striker who didn’t take penalties.

We all know what happened last season, signing for Newcastle United and then a serious injury on international duty before he had kicked a ball in anger for United. Then coming back from that injury too early and suffering for it, never able to reach full fitness and show what he could do.

Sunday wasn’t Yoane Wissa showing something new, it was what he had done on a regular basis for Brentford and DR Congo, though not Newcastle United…

He looked good at the World Cup finals, fully fit and sharp.

On Sunday, Yoane Wissa followed that up and also showed the benefit of a pre-season with his teammates.

Man of the match against Liverpool, Yoanne Wissa spoke to BBC Newcastle: “This gives us lot of confidence. We showed that we are ready to fight for everything. The main focus will be to not to lose many games and be ready for the league. It is going to be a difficult season but we are ready for that.”

It was a joy to watch Yoane Wissa on Sunday, the confidence clearly flooding back and his ability to carry the ball there for all to see.

At no time more so than when his brilliant run saw him leave three Liverpool players trailing and then set up Joe Willock, his finish just as good.

Yoane Wissa also keen to talk about Matthias Jaissle: “It has been a lot of work for him. We have had a lot of meetings to understand how he wants us to play. Today we showed that we all understand how he thinks about football and it was unlucky that we drew at the end. I wanted to win for him.”

Yoane Wissa didn’t just win the official man of the match award against Liverpool.

The BBC Sport site saw thousands of visitors give their ratings out of 10 for all 29 players who got on the St James’ Park pitch. Alexander Isak rated 29th of 29 with an average rating of 3.81, whilst rated top of all 29 was a certain Yoane Wissa, rated on average 7.65.

Newcastle United fans have seen countless players turn their NUFC careers around after failing to impress early doors.

It is only one match but I think we have now seen the player that Eddie Howe signed, rather than the one that struggled through last season.
