Newcastle United have missed out on Victor Munoz, with Liverpool now set to sign him after meeting his €40million (Approx £34.6m) release clause.
The Athletic reporting: ‘[Liverpool] Sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football Michael Edwards driving the deal. Liverpool will pay the fee in two instalments.’
The report going on to say: ‘Victor Munoz is part of Spain’s World Cup squad and Liverpool staff are at the Spain camp in Atlanta to conduct a medical there. He will sign a six-year contract at Anfield and will become the club’s first signing since the appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach earlier this month. Bolstering their attacking options has been Liverpool’s priority in the transfer market since Mohamed Salah left the club at the end of last season. Hugo Ekitike will miss the start of next season due to an Achilles injury, while Federico Chiesa is expected to move on this summer.’
It was last Thursday (11 June 2026) when it was first reported that Newcastle United were in talks with Osasuna to try and sign Victor Munoz.
The media in both Spain and the UK were reporting it as an all but done deal for United and that just a case of finalising the deal. Early on it was reported that Newcastle United had made an offer of more than €30m (approx £26.0m) guaranteed, plus potential future add-on amounts.
Exactly at what point Liverpool made their first approach to Osasuna and/or the player is an unknown. Whether or not all along Liverpool were also in talks at the same time as Newcastle United, or potentially Victor Munoz and/or his club waiting to see what interest there might be from elsewhere.
Now with The Athletic and other media reporting that Victor Munoz has chosen to sign for Liverpool, some journalists are stating that Newcastle United had also met that £34.6m release clause after talks.
Who knows what did and didn’t happen but one thing appears for sure now, the winger who turns 23 in July appears set to sign for Liverpool.
A number of factors were previously reported to have helped complicate and delay a deal for Victor Munoz getting finalised by Newcastle, as Osasuna sacked their manager Alessio Lisci after finishing only one place above the relegation places and his replacement Luis Miguel Ramis only appointed last Wednesday (10 June 2026).
There was also the fact that Real Madrid (who sold Victor Munoz to Osasuna last summer) still owned half the rights to the player and so Osasuna would only bank half of whatever a club paid for the winger.
Victor Munoz was one of the few positives for Osasuna last season, having signed from Real Madrid on 11 July 2025 at the age of 21. He turned 22 two days later and despite his current club’s troubles across the 2025/26 season, the rapid winger proved a big hit and scored six league goals as well as getting two assists.
Such was his form, Munoz forced his way into the Spain squad and made a goalscoring debut in March 2026 as they defeated Serbia 3-0. After two international appearances, Victor Munoz selected for the Spanish World Cup squad.
The diminutive 5ft 8 winger was seen as the kind of raw relatively inexperienced and unexposed young talent that Newcastle United are said to be targeting this summer, having already agreed a £24m deal for 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
