Welcome to day 31 of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There were 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
We were left with 32 countries for the knockouts after 16 were eliminated in the group stage.
The 16 eliminated at the end of the group stage were: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Uzbekistan, Scotland, Iran and South Korea.
Then you can add Egypt, Colombia, USA, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Paraguay, Australia, Cape Verde, Ghana, Croatia, Algeria, Austria, DR Congo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, Sweden, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, South Africa. Netherlands, Germany and Japan to that list as they exited in the rounds of 32 and 16.
Now Belgium and Morocco have been knocked out in the quarter-finals.
Morocco were feeble and showed all but nothing going forward, just one effort on target all match. Kylian Mbabbe failed with a feeble penalty but then scored a cracking goal to get things moving and Dembele with the second goal that ended any faint hopes of Morocco getting back into it, not that they ever did really.
Very similar with Belgium. They were a little more enterprising than Morocco but not to any great extent. Spain controlled the match and Ruiz scored after half an hour, only for Belgium to shock them with an equaliser headed home by De Ketelaere just before half-time.
That was about it really from Belgium as they managed only one other effort on target and only the one corner the entire match. A blunder from Man U keeper Lammens gifted the winner to Mikel Merino and Spain, though really they could and should have won by more than the eventual 2-1 scoreline.
To me they have never really looked as if they have got out of third gear in the tournament and will surely need to find fourth (and fifth!) gear in their semi-final to realistically stand a good chance of beating France (as they did on the way to winning the 2024 Euros against England).
Now it is the other half of the draw, England v Norway at (UK time) 10pm tonight and (UK time) 2am on Sunday, Argentina v Switzerland.
It is now 285 goals in 98 matches and this 2026 World Cup not too far short of averaging three goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup but the chances of it happening are now all but gone. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.91 goals per game after the first 98 matches. To get up to an average of three goals per match across the tournament, there would need to be at least 27 goals scored in the six games left to play (including the third-place play-off match).
Here are the round of 16 results and the quarter-finals (all kick-offs are shown as UK times and with the channel that is showing them.
