Premier League football is back this weekend.
It all feels like when you were a kid and heading back to school after the summer holidays. The teachers having to get you back into the zone after so long away from the action, remind you of what you are supposed to be doing and how things are done. Half the time in lessons getting taken up by those who had forgotten their pens, books, attitudes…
It now feels like Premier League 2.0.
A time to reboot, remember where we are at.
How did it ever come to this? The Premier League season kicks off and then four weeks later it all stops for three weeks.
By the time we get to Saturday 21 November 2026 there will only have been ten rounds of Premier League matches. In three months, in thirteen weeks, only ten top tier matches played.
How have we got to this point?
It is amazing how conditioned we all get to see it as now just how it is. The season kicks off and before it has really started it all just stops.
This 2026/27 season it is play five Premier League matches, stop for three weeks, play five Premier League matches, stop for two weeks…
The 2025/26 season saw only 11 Premier League matches played by the time we got to 22 November 2025, the only reason there was one extra by that point was because the season had started a week earlier due to the impending 2026 World Cup finals.
Last season the early schedule routine was play three Premier League matches, stop for two weeks, play four Premier League matches, stop for two weeks, play four Premier League matches, stop for two weeks…
All of this disruption just to facilitate endless mainly meaningless international matches that bore the pants off you with rare exceptions.
Making more money is used as the justification for every single unpopular change in football. Why can’t it ever be football fans that are the key people in deciding the agenda in ‘our’ game?
