It has now been revealed the appointment of a Newcastle United Assistant Sporting Director.
This role is number two to Ross Wilson, the Newcastle United Sporting Director who arrived at the club only 11 months ago himself, in October 2025.
Wilson arriving hot on the heels of David Hopkinson taking on the vacancy of CEO the previous month (September 2025).
So many changes at the club since then.
Since the summer 2026 transfer window closed we have seen Steve Nickson become the first ever Wrexham Sporting Director, that then followed by Andy Howe leaving.
Now Ross Wilson has moved to create a new role, with Jack Ross himself revealing that he is now the Newcastle United Assistant Sporting Director.
Jack Ross announcing via Linkedin: “I am excited to share that I have moved to the position of Assistant Sporting Director at Newcastle United Football Club.”
A former Sunderland manager, Jack Ross has held a number of roles at St James’ Park and in July 2025 was appointed as Head of Football Strategy at Newcastle United.
Back then, in July 2025, the official Newcastle United announcement stating that; ‘In addition to overseeing the club’s player loan and emerging talent strategy, Jack will also lead on building strategic relationships with other clubs, introducing new football development and talent pathway opportunities in the UK and overseas. The establishment of this model is aimed at enabling talent depth and retention, as well as supporting the development of Newcastle United’s global brand and IP.’
Jack Ross left what proved to be his final manager’s job at Dundee United in August 2022, aged 46. Then seemingly not having tried to get another managerial post, maybe this wasn’t where his main long-term interest was. Possibly not totally in love with the specific role of manager.
On 31 March 2023 Jack Ross first arrived at Newcastle United as Interim Head of Coach Development.
By July 2025 he was United’s Head of Football Strategy and now Assistant Sporting Director.
Jack Ross is clearly ambitious and when you look back, he wasn’t your typical player or manager.
He was chairman of the PFA Scotland players’ union, then worked with the worldwide FIFPro union. Whilst Jack Ross also holds a master’s degree in economics from Heriot-Watt University.
