When Newcastle United St James’ Park hosts Euro 2028 it will provide £120m boost to Tyneside

Newcastle City Council have given an update on the benefits it will bring, when Newcastle United and St James’ Park, host matches at the Euro 2028 finals.

Tyneside will host five games in total, including England in the last 16  if everything goes to plan and the Three Lions qualify for Euro 2028 and finish top of Group B.

In an official statement (see below), Newcastle City Council explaining the wide ranging benefits that come via St James’ Park having been selected to play a major role in Euro 2028, with an expected extra £120m flows into the local economy.

Euro 2028 will start on Friday 9 June 2028 and end with the final on Sunday 9 July 2028.

It will be played at nine venues across England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

There will be 51 games played during Euro 2028 and this is the split on where matches will be hosted:

Wembley Stadium (London) – eight matches
Principality Stadium (Cardiff) – six matches
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London) – five matches
Etihad Stadium (Manchester) – five matches
Hill Dickinson Stadium (Liverpool) – five matches
St James’ Park (Newcastle) – five matches
Villa Park (Birmingham) – four matches
Hampden Park (Glasgow) – six matches
Aviva Stadium (Dublin) – seven matches

Group games
Monday 12 June 2028 (Group E match)
Thursday 15 June 2028 (Group C match)
Saturday 17 June 2028 (Group F match)
Tuesday 20 June 2028 (Group D match)

Then on Sunday 25 June 2028, St James’ Park will host the last 16 knockout match between the winners of Group B and one of the third in the group finishers from Groups A, D, E or F (There are six groups and the top two in each four team group automatically go through to the last 16, plus the best four who finish third in their groups).

Assuming England qualify for Euro 2028, they will be in Group B and so if they top their four team group at the tournament in summer 2028, they will play their last 16 knockout match at St James’ Park.

Newcastle City Council official statement on 23 June 2026 starting: ‘In exactly two years’ time, the UEFA EURO tournament will be kicking off in the United Kingdom and Ireland – and preparations are well underway to ensure fans have a fantastic time in Newcastle. And Newcastle City Council will be making sure there is plenty going on around the city during the month-long tournament as we put Newcastle firmly on the international map. Preparations and plans are well underway to not only show off our incredible city and present activities and events for hundreds of thousands of visitors and football fans, but also ensure daily life continues for residents and businesses. These plans include a massive UEFA Festival, with City Centre sites and park locations, details of which will be revealed soon.’

The City Council statement going on to add: ‘Although it won’t be until December 2027 when the draw reveals which countries will be playing at St James’ Park, the five games and month-long tournament is expected to bring in an additional £120million into the local economy. EURO 2028 is a major catalyst for growth across the city and the North East, boosting tourism, supporting local business, and driving regional investment.’
