On Tuesday morning news broke in the Netherlands that Newcastle United and Ajax had agreed a deal for Sean Steur.
Standing 6ft tall, De Telegraaf reported that the exciting 18-year-old central midfielder has also agreed personal terms, a contract with Newcastle United until the end of June 2031.
Writing for De Telegraaf when revealing the imminent transfer, Mike Verweij: “It is striking that Sean Steur is closing the door on the Johan Cruijff ArenA after 26 matches for Ajax 1…After the mismanagement of recent years, Ajax has a limited war chest to strengthen the squad, and therefore the board is seeking additional funds on the transfer market. In that respect, the sale of Steur comes as a godsend….On the other hand, there is naturally the enormous sporting loss, as Steur is regarded as a mega-talent.”
The De Telegraaf journalist reporting that a €27m (£23m) deal had been agreed between Newcastle United and Ajax for the young midfielder.
De Telegraaf stating that the agreement is for €24m (£20.5m) to be paid as the initial transfer fee and then “easily achievable” future bonus payments of another €3m (£2.5m). The Dutch newspaper also revealing that if Newcastle United sell Sean Steur in the future, Ajax will be entitled to 12.5 percent of any profit in that transfer.
There was then widespread reporting from UK media confirming that Sean Steur is set to be the third Newcastle United summer buy.
Sky Sports reported that that Sean Steur was booked in to have his medical on Wednesday morning before formally signing for NUFC.
Keith Downie covers Newcastle United for Sky Sports and he has said that Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson agreed the fine details of the deal early Tuesday morning. He will become the third summer signing for Newcastle United, as he follows 20-year-olds Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure through the door.
Keith Downie reporting: “The club feel this shows, on the back of Bazou Toure, that it’s important to show that deals can happen both quietly and swiftly.”
The De Telegraaf journalist, Mike Verweij, who originally revealed the deal was happening, has published photos of Sean Steur arriving at Newcastle Airport ahead of his medical:

Sean Steur made his breakthrough at the age of 17 into the Ajax first team this most recent (2025/26) season and ended up making 22 appearances, scoring one goal and getting two assists.
The now 18-year-old has played at every youth age group for the Netherlands up to and including the Under 19s.
With Newcastle United having already signed 20-year-olds Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure the clear main emphasis is on signing young emerging talent from the continent this summer.
