The gutter press were at it again on Wednesday, claiming as fact that Newcastle United have told Sandro Tonali they will be willing to sell him, if they don’t qualify for Europe.

However, this claim of a ‘Gentleman’s agreement’ has been rubbished by the club.

The gutter press just making up yet more nonsense in an attempt to undermine Newcastle United, trying to create division amongst the club, the players, the fans.

It has now been revealed that the club have given an official response to the Sandro Tonali claims.

Amongst other journalists who regularly cover Newcastle United, Luke Edwards of The Telegraph is amongst those who had been contacted on Thursday night.

He states: “Newcastle United official has communicated to media tonight that there is no gentleman’s agreement Sandro Tonali can leave this summer if club do not qualify for Europe.”

Nobody has a crystal ball, who knows what will happen in the next transfer window and indeed those that follow.

The man from The Telegraph going on to say: “That does not mean he won’t leave but he hasn’t said he wants to go and neither has there been any contact with Newcastle United from interested clubs at this stage.”

This has happened year after year, window after window. Yet of all the numerous claims that Newcastle United stars were (supposedly) definitely leaving, Alexander Isak is the only one who has left St James’ Park of his own volition.

All of Newcastle’s best players are under contract for a number of years, there is no contract pressure to sell any of them.

United need to keep their best players to give them the best chance of a successful 2026/27 season and beyond.

As Luke Edwards points out: “It’s only March but yet another week of stories linking Newcastle players with a move. Going to be a long summer…”

When you have quality players, there is always going to be speculation. Other clubs are always going to want them.

Whether it actually happens is of course another matter.
