You never buy a used car without a test drive

In my case, it was a used motorbike.

Back in the day, with seasonal work on the horizon at Gateshead Council, I spent hard earned savings to buy a bike to get to work on.

I was so impatient I didn’t get my mechanically minded mate over to check it out and test ride it.

Instead, I had a very short ride around the block as the seller was in a hurry. Then it was mine.

The novelty soon wore off the next day, when it’s first proper ride into the country ended up with me crawling home at walking pace, as the engine lost it’s power.

Then I had to spend the same amount I paid for it, getting the engine rebuilt by my mate.

So this also rings true with transfers, with Newcastle United signings.

Especially with what seems like the biggest waste of money in NUFC history.

If clubs could have all new players on approval for a season before buying them, then we could have sent Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga back where they came from.

Then spent the money on replacements who were actually fit for purpose.

Now Newcastle United are in the same position as I was all those years ago.

Hurried buys which lead to utter disappointment and leave you no better off!
