Wrexham have now officially announced the recruitment of Steve Nickson from Newcastle United as their new Sporting Director.
He leaves after a decade and a half at St James’ Park.
Working his way up at Newcastle United, Steve Nickson was most recently working with the job title of NUFC Head of Recruitment under Sporting Director Ross Wilson.
Wrexham have created a new position so Nickson comes in now as their Sporting Director.
This move has been well reported but it is only now on Monday 7 September 2026 that Wrexham have been able to announce the appointment.
The assumption I would guess is that Newcastle United wanted to wait until the transfer window had closed in England before allowing Steve Nickson to start his new job.

The Championship club announcing on Monday afternoon: ‘Wrexham AFC are delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Nickson as the Club’s Sporting Director. Steve, 52, joins the Red Dragons from Premier League club Newcastle United, where he has spent the past 15 years, first as Head of Youth Recruitment and since 2017, as Head of Recruitment. His appointment represents an important step in the continued development of Wrexham’s football structure as the Club builds for long-term, sustainable success. In this newly created role, Steve will report to CEO Michael Williamson and the Board, while working closely alongside Men’s First Team Manager Phil Parkinson, his coaching staff and the wider football leadership team.’
The official Wrexham statement going on to say: ‘Steve’s remit will include establishing and leading the Club’s scouting and player recruitment function, supporting first team squad planning, overseeing football administration, sports medical and performance and the Academy, while helping to develop the systems and processes required to support Wrexham’s ambitions on and off the pitch. Before joining Newcastle United, Steve spent 12 years at Blackburn Rovers, ultimately as Head of Youth Recruitment. Across his career, he has built extensive experience in identifying, recruiting and developing talent across academy, emerging talent and first team pathways.’

The journey so far has been remarkable, with three consecutive promotions and a seventh-place finish in the Club’s first season back in the second tier.
