In July, it was revealed that Newcastle United winger Antonio Cordero would be heading back to Spain on loan.
An official Newcastle United announcement:‘Newcastle United winger Antonio Cordero will rejoin Cádiz CF on loan for the 2026/27 campaign. Antonio returns to Cádiz following a successful loan spell during the second half of the 2025/26 season, where he made 21 appearances in the Spanish Segunda División, scoring three times.’
Things haven’t gone too well for Cadiz this season, heading into this weekend they had drawn four league matches and lost three, with no wins.
That all changed on Saturday and Antonio Cordero was at the heart of it with a man of the match performance.
The Newcastle United loan player saw a left foot shot roll just past the right post in the very early stages of this league matche against CD Leganes but inside six minutes Antonio Cordero was on the score sheet, he drilled a left foot effort into the bottom left corner giving the keeper no chance.
The winger is a bit of a rarity as he is so comfortable with both feet and set-pieces taken with his right foot causing the visitors problems.
Cadiz went 2-0 up on 54 minutes through Kopotun, then with just under 20 minutes to go it was a sweet finish with his right foot as Antonio Cordero got his second. A teammate later adding another for a 4-0 rout.
Whilst the Spanish club haven’t started well this season, Antonio Cordero has been one of the rare exceptions with his performances. Starting six of the eight league matches he has now scored three goals and got one assist.
Ahead of joining Newcastle United in summer 2025, Antonio Cordero was seen as one of the best emerging young talents in Spain and attracting interest from many clubs, Cordero managed 13 direct goal involvements for Malaga in the Spanish second tier 2024/25 season, scoring six and getting seven assists.
After signing for United, the then 18-year-old sent to Belgian top tier club Westerlo to get some regular first team football to help his progression. However, the teenage winger’s move to Belgium proved a disaster.
As in so many other cases where young NUFC players go out on loan to get plenty of first team football…but then don’t, in the first half of the 2025/26 season Antonito Cordero not given a single league start by Westerlo and instead only 87 minutes in seven brief appearances from the bench.
A lot of Newcastle fans pointing the finger at Shola Ameobi, who since 2019 had been the Loan Coordinator/Manager at NUFC, overseeing young players sent out on loan.
All parties agreeing to cut short that doomed loan spell, Antonio Cordero then announced as going on loan to Cadiz on 31 December 2025. A return to the Spanish second tier for the teenager.
As the club pointed out, the young Newcastle United prospect enjoying a far more productive second half of last season. After no goals in his first 11 starts for Cadiz earlier this year in the second half of the 2025/26 season, Antonio Cordero then scored three goals in his last five matches in the starting eleven.
Good luck to the 19-year-old for the rest of this season and hopefully plenty of first team football to assist his development, plus more goals and assists as well.
