Now made public how many West Brom fans have bought tickets for Newcastle United match

West Brom fans are travelling up to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

A second round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United with a 7.45pm kick-off.

The last time the Baggies played at St James’ Park was 12 December 2020 but zero West Brom fans made the trip.

This was in the days of Covid and no spectators allowed, Miguel Almiron scoring in the opening minute and then after Furlong equalised for the visitors, Dwight Gayle scored on 82 minutes to secure a 2-1 Premier League victory at St James’ Park.

The last time St James’ Park hosted West Brom fans was on 28 April 2018, Rafa Benitez had led Newcastle United to three home Premier League wins in a row against Southampton, Huddersfield and Arsenal but that run ended when a Phillips goal gave West Brom a 1-0 away victory in front of a 52,283 full house.

More than eight years on, how many West Brom fans will be making the midweek trip for a Carabao Cup second round match?

West Brom took an allocation of 3,214 tickets, which is the same as the usual Premier League allocation for away fans at St James’ Park. In the Carabao Cup though, away sides are entitled to 10% of capacity (15% in FA Cup matches). Whilst 10% of the St James’ Park capacity would equal 5,200+, issues with segregation and home and away fans needing to use different exits means that for Carabao Cup matches it is usually just under 4,900 as a maximum number of away supporters for this competition at SJP.

The Hawthorns club have now given an update (at 12.45pm Tuesday) on the eve of the match, as to how many West Brom fans have bought tickets so far.

The official WBA social media declaring: ‘2,000 of you heading to the north-east so far! Supporters are informed they have until midday tomorrow to purchase their ticket for our Carabao Cup clash with the Magpies, with none available to buy on the day at St. James’ Park.’

West Brom won 3-1 at home to Burnley on Sunday and having also won 2-1 at Norwich on the opening day of the season, the Baggies are one of only three Championship clubs with maximum points so far. Completing a perfect start, West Brom won 4-1 away at Rotherham in the Carabao Cup first round to win the right to play at St James’ Park.

Interesting to note that the official West Brom media states: ‘Please note, only paper tickets will be available for this fixture.’
