Here we go again! The pundits, so-called experts and much of the football media already seem to have Newcastle United written off.
According to some, we’re relegation candidates before a ball has even been kicked.
Admittedly, these are chaotic times. There’s been a seismic shift at the club, both on and off the pitch. But does that really justify the level of negativity being thrown our way?
Time and time again I read comments like, “What are PIF doing?”, “They’re selling all our best players,” and “They’re heading for relegation.”
The reality is far less dramatic.
The Premier League’s financial structure is set up so that the traditional top six can offer wages that most other clubs simply cannot compete with. Every season they cherry-pick the league’s best talent, and when a player is offered double their current salary, it’s hardly surprising if they decide to move. We may not like it, but it’s the reality of modern football.
Last summer’s transfer strategy didn’t work as planned, so it looks as though the club has returned to the model that served us so well: signing young, talented, relatively unknown players and blending them with experienced leaders already in the squad. That approach brought us players like Gordon, Bruno, Tonali, Hall and Livramento alongside the experience of Trippier, Burn, Joelinton, Murphy and Schär.
It seems the club is returning to that blueprint and I believe it’s the right move. Add a couple of experienced signings and I genuinely think we’ll have a very competitive squad for the season ahead.
Change is never easy to accept, but when it’s embraced and managed well, it can bring significant rewards.
Last season showed that you can’t stand still and expect everything to keep moving forward. A few players looked as though their minds were elsewhere, Eddie Howe looked fatigued at times, and performances dipped in key areas. Perhaps change wasn’t just inevitable—it was necessary.
I’ve got my ticket for the Liverpool game and I honestly can’t wait to see what the new manager and the new players bring. It’s a fresh chapter and I’m excited to see it unfold.
One final point: the bookmakers are rarely far wrong, and they don’t have Newcastle United anywhere near the relegation battle this season.
Sunderland, however… now that’s a different matter!
