Welcome to day 24 of the 2026 World Cup finals.

We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.

There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.

We were left with 32 countries for the knockouts after 16 were eliminated in the group stage.

The 16 eliminated at the end of the group stage were: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Uzbekistan, Scotland, Iran and South Korea.

Now you can add Australia, Cape Verde, Ghana, Croatia, Algeria, Austria, DR Congo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, Sweden, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, South Africa. Netherlands, Germany and Japan to that list as all 16 matches in the round of 32 have been played. We are now down to the final 16 after the last 24 hours or so of drama.

The 14th game of the 16 in the round of 32 was very low on quality, Egypt taking the lead on 13 minutes and ten minutes after half-time and own goal levelled it. The real drama in this match had to wait for penalties, Egypt coming out on top against Australia.

Argentina had been confidently expected to brush aside Cape Verde and a brilliant Lionel Messi finish put them ahead on 29 minutes. I think Argentina are vastly overrated and certainly this match didn’t convince otherwise. As is usually the case, once they scored, rather than going for the killer second the Argentina team attempted to bore the opposition and watching fans to death. Cape Verde kept their heads and discipline though and more than matched Argentina, when they equalised through an excellent Duarte goal on 59 minutes it was fully deserved.

The final stats show both teams had eight corners each, whilst Argentina had only a few more shots, 20 compared to Cape Verde’s 16. Unfortunately, two of Argentina’s shots went into the opposition net in extra time and only one of Cape Verde’s did the same. Lisandro Martinez putting Argentina back in the lead two minutes into extra time, only for Cabral to dramatically equalise things for Cape Verde again 11 minutes later. Then with penalties looking on the cards, a Cape Verde own goal sadly handed victory to Argentina with only nine minutes remaining of extra time.

Colombia booked the final space in the last 16. They dominated a poor Ghana side and a 14th minute Arias goal settled it, the only surprise Colombia then didn’t convert more of their chances. Ghana didn’t have a singe effort on target and only had four on target across their three group matches.

There was extra drama off the pitch with news on Friday night that Fifa were planning on moving the Mexico v England match forward by six hours to 7pm (UK time) on Sunday due to the threat of thunderstorms. However, a u-turn from Fifa saw them stick with original 1am (UK time) Monday morning slot, which is 6pm Sunday in terms of local time in Mexico.

At 6pm on Saturday we will see Canada v Morocco kick off the last 16 stage, all eight of the round of 16 matches are detailed below

It is now 257 goals in 88 matches and this 2026 World Cup not far short of averaging three goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup but the chances of it happening are now reducing in the knockout stages. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.92 goals per game after the first 88 matches. There are now only 16 games left to play (including the third-place play-off match).

Here are the round of 32 results and details of the now upcoming eight games to be played to decide the quarter-finalists, all kick-offs are shown as UK times and with the channel that is showing them.
