Coventry 4 Newcastle 1 – Monday 12 October 2026 8pm
Newcastle United fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘An at times comical display especially in defence resulted in defeat against a team that had only score one goal before tonight.
The penalty after just 6 mins was a sign of how things were going to play out tonight, poor decisions all night…
A game to forget against a poor team that put four past us (from just 6 on target!).
Best not to put into words how I’m feeling as I always try to be positive… Let’s hope for better all round on Saturday.’
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:
‘Well that was another nightmare on Monday!
Hornicek at fault for their first, Fernandez should have had us level before half time but fluffed his lines and after the restart, with Willock down injured, we go two behind.
When Botman scored with that piledriver I thought we’d get something but Hall and Joelinton conspired to gift them their third and after that the fourth looked inevitable.
Are we in trouble? Maybe.
Let’s see what response Jaissle gets against Villa.’
GToon:
‘An embarrassment on a scale not seen for quite a few years.
Might have been different if the flag happy linesman hadn’t got the call on Barnes wrong when he should have kept his flag down.
We need to hope Man City get relegated to take up a place on this performance.
I really enjoyed the (international) break from this. Please no more Botman.’
David Punton:
‘Humiliating.
Newly promoted Coventry help themselves to a 4-1 win, leaving us with many questions to be answered about where we are.
A game that just screamed of major concerns and points at a season of struggle.
The three week international break was too long and then we land this graveyard shift on Monday Night Football.
Frank Lampard will hardly have been able to have believed his luck tonight.
Questions for the manager to answer. A response needed from the players.
Am horrendous result and performance.’
Billy Miller:
‘Of course!
Obviously with the chance to go 4th we got battered by a team in the relegation zone.
Our only goal being the most difficult one to score. Well done to Botman for the belter but we were painfully wasteful.
Whilst Coventry converted nearly everything, we fluffed multiple good situations. MFP the most culpable. He’s like the new old Osula. Full of running and pace but with poor decision making.
Him remaining on for the entirety was baffling. He’s still adjusting and I’m sure he’ll come good but he needs to be benched and earn his place.’
Greg McPeake:
‘The old Wissa returns.
Barnes has off day courtesy of a poor referee and Botman pulls off a worldie but that shouldn’t hide his mistakes at the back.
The result doesn’t reflect the game where we were on top for large parts and with a bit of luck would have been in control.
They have had their cup final and can now go back to where they belong, the Championship.
Having said that, being beaten by the little clubs beginning with B is much harder to take.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Well I’ve been very supportive of our new manager before this shambles but Matthias Jaissle has Well and truly been found out.
2-1 win over hull papered over the cracks, yet we get hammered off a limited Coventry team.
It was a Steve Bruce masterclass in every department.
Back on the coach home and I genuinely don’t know where we go from here.’
