Welcome to day eighteen of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
The 48 teams were divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group automatically going through and the eight best performing teams who finish third in their groups.
So only 16 of the 48 countries to be knocked out after the 72 group games have all played out, with the other 32 teams going through to the knockout stages.
We have now reached a point where all of the 72 group games have been played. That means only 32 knockout matches to go.
The final three groups have been decided in the past 24 hours.
England have topped Group L but a poor performance of few chances against Panama eventually saw Bellingham and Kane score in the final half hour. A lot of improvement needed if England are to progress to the latter stages.
Croatia won 2-1 to end up second in Group L, whilst that defeat for Ghana sees then qualify from third place.
In the early hours of Sunday (UK time), Colombia ended up topping group K with a goalless draw against Portugal, who also need to significantly improve. Ronaldo and his teammates finish runners-up whilst Yoane Wissa was man of the match to help carry DR Congo into the last 32 with a third place finish. Uzbekistan led until the 68th minute but two Wissa strikes amongst three DR Congo goals ensured they qualify for the knockout stages a very first time.
The final group to be decided saw Argentina top group J with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Jordan, Messi scoring again. To complete that group both Algeria and Austria qualified after a dramatic 3-3 draw, both team scoring in added time to ensure they progressed.
It is now 215 goals in 72 group matches and this 2026 World Cup the smallest of fractions short of averaging three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup, just one more goal (216 not 215) was needed in the group stage. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.99 goals per game after the 72 group matches.
The 16 eliminated at the end of the group stage are: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Uzbekistan, Scotland, Iran and South Korea.
We now have 32 matches remaining in the knockout stages.
