The Switzerland international now seeing his Newcastle United contract extended to 30 June 2027.
Rafa Benitez took advantage of a relegation clause in his Deportivo la Coruna contract to sign Fabian Schar for only £3m back in summer 2018.
Summing Steve Bruce up, he never rated Fabian Schar and preferred the likes of Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles, Bruce even at times playing midfielder Isaac Hayden as a central defender ahead of the brilliant Swiss defender.
Eddie Howe reacting to today’s great news: “Fabian has been outstanding since I arrived at the football club so I’m really pleased to see that he’ll be staying with us. He’s a really highly valued member of our squad, not only for his ability on the pitch but also for the leadership and experience he brings to the group.”
By the time his new contract is set to end, Fabian Schar will have been with the club nine years.
Eddie Howe adding: “Fabian’s form was really strong until injury ended his season. His creative distribution, defensive mentality and huge experience was a big miss towards the end of the last campaign. He has worked tirelessly to regain his fitness and we look forward to seeing him back in action next season.”
Ahead of the final match of the 2025/26 season at Fulham: Keith Downie of Sky Sports reported: “Newcastle United have offered Fabian Schar a new contract and are hopeful he will sign it. The 34-year-old has been offered reduced terms, and will need to understand his role in the group moving forward.”
Eddie Howe saying at his pre-Fulham press conference 11 days ago: “We have spoken to Fabian and his agent and we are hoping for a successful outcome. We want him to stay, he’s been unbelievable for us.”
