Sunderland giving a bit of light relief to Newcastle United fans.
The Mackems had been celebrating when all powerful Manchester City knocked United out of the FA Cup on Saturday night.
Sunderland surely given all but a bye to the last eight of the FA Cup, as they played rock bottom of the third tier Port Vale.
Yet Sunday’s match didn’t quite go according to plan…not for the Mackems anyway.
A feeble effort by Sunderland as they barely threatened and lost to the team at the very bottom of League One, indeed, the winning margin could and should have been more than the one goal.
The crowning glory though was of course, the identity of the Port Vale match winner.
Ben Waine is a 24 year old born in New Zealand BUT is a lifelong Newcastle United fan!
This is due to his mother who is a Geordie and after he headed the Mackems out of the FA Cup, he did an Alan Shearer style goal celebration.
Port Vale now progress into the last eight of the FA Cup and dream of glory.
Meanwhile, Sunderland now have the acute embarrassment of exiting both domestic cups this season to third tier clubs!!
Speaking after Port Vale dumped Sunderland out of the FA Cup, Ben Waine reacting: “I always watched the Newcastle games against Sunderland, so to even be involved in that game and to score is something pretty special. Not only for me… but my family as well.”
The lifelong Newcastle United fan adding: “I knew I would get a little boo as well from the Sunderland fans, so it was quite a nice moment to run past them and give a little bit back. They were giving me a bit of stick, which I expected as soon as it went out about me being a Newcastle United fan. I knew it was coming.”
