An interesting start to this Newcastle United season.
A rollercoaster ride as always for the fans.
The highs, the lows, plus rare moments that fall somewhere in between.
The Matthias Jaissle era is now 12 weeks and 10 matches in,
So what have you made of this 2026-27 Newcastle United season so far?
The basic details are that Matthias Jaissle and his Newcastle United players have won five games, drawn two and lost three.
So have they got what they deserved?
I have gone through all of the ten results so far and given my verdict on what I think would have been the fairest outcomes in each case, based on the overall performances of Newcastle United and the opposition sides.
Newcastle 2 Liverpool 2 WIN
Newcastle 3 West Brom 2 WIN
Spurs 0 Newcastle 2 WIN
Newcastle 2 Bournemouth 2 LOSE
Millwall 0 Newcastle 1 WIN
Leeds 4 Newcastle 1 LOSE
Newcastle 2 Hull 1 WIN
Coventry 4 Newcastle 1 LOSE
Newcastle 0 Aston Villa 1 LOSE
Crystal Palace 0 Newcastle 2 WIN
The Newcastle United players have won both Carabao Cup ties and progressed through to play Everton in the last 16, I think for sure Matthias Jaissle’s side deserved to win both cup games.
In the Premier League, United have 11 points from their eight games, so do you think that has been a fair return based on what we have watched?
In every match there are so many factors that contribute to the eventual outcome, with the Coventry match a great example. Despite losing 4-1, the reality is that Newcastle dominated the match and created far more clear chances than the home side. United gifted the first and third goals with individual errors and the referee helped Coventry with the second. Pretty much everything the Sky Blues hit went in and they were clinical, Newcastle the exact opposite as they wasted so many great chances. However, I am not going to argue that Newcastle United deserved anything. The home team ‘deserved’ their victory because of the extremes of the finishing at both ends of the pitch.
The two games where I have gone against the actual results are the home matches with Bournemouth and Liverpool.
Newcastle were clearly the better team in the second half against Bournemouth and I think there is a case for saying Matthias Jaissle’s side deserved the point they got, but for the benefits of this exercise I think the Cherries’ first half superiority was greater than United’s after the break.
As for the first game of the season, I definitely think on the performances of the two teams the Newcastle United players deserved to beat Liverpool. Not by a huge margin but overall the three points would have been deserved.
So by my reckoning, instead of two draws the fairest outcomes would have been a win over Liverpool and defeat to Bournemouth.
The final reckoning for me is that when it comes to what would have been ‘deserved’ across the eight Premier League matches so far, NUFC should have 12 points now and not 11.
Roughly speaking though, Newcastle United have got what they deserved so far at this point.
