Back in June 2024 we saw the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh by Newcastle United.
An emergency PSR situation that needed to be solved by 30 June 2024, the end of the NUFC financial year, or else United would break PSR three-year limits and be deducted points.
It was reported that in the remaining days of June 2024, more than £50m pure profit had to be generated, taking into account the book value of the players who could potentially be sold to make up the shortfall.
Young rising stars who had cost the club little or nothing and who could be sold for sizeable amounts, were sadly the ones who could most easily generate the more than £50m pure profit, as they had such low/minimal book values.
So Elliot Anderson was sold for a reported £35m to Nottingham Forest, whilst Yankua Minteh reportedly sold for around £33m to Brighton.
Nobody has held their hands up to take responsibility for how this critical situation had suddenly needed to be solved. However, those running the club on a hands-on basis in the years where this crisis had been allowed to develop, were the then CEO Darren Eales, along with Amanda Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi who were paid via a management contract to help run NUFC.
The recent sale of Elliot Anderson for £116m from Forest to Man City had seen the news confirmed that no sell-on clause had been included when Newcastle sold the Geordie midfielder. Seemingly summing up how desperate the position had been, that those running Newcastle United at the time couldn’t insist on such a sell-on clause.
However, with Liverpool trying to buy Yankuba Minteh, details have now been made public of the deal that took him to Brighton from Newcastle United.
Craig Hope at The Mail has now reported that his information is that there IS a sell-on clause in existence, which will see Newcastle United benefit if Brighton sell Yankuba Minteh for a profit.
The man from The Mail stating that his understanding is that a ten per cent sell-on clause exists in Newcastle United’s favour for any profit the winger is sold for.
Hope reports that Newcastle United actually sold Yankuba Minteh for £30m in June 2024 and that whist Liverpool have made it clear they are willing to pay £65m, Brighton are wanting more like £80m for their young star winger.
So if Liverpool (or another club) did end up buying Yankuba Minteh for £80m, the £50m profit generated by Brighton would see Newcastle United bank £5m of it.
