It has now been revealed that Nottingham Forest have made an approach to try and buy Jacob Murphy.
The Northern Echo say they have been told that the rival Premier League have made contact with the Newcastle United hierarchy to state their interest in signing the lifelong United fan and hope to now have discussions to try and get a deal sorted.
Ross Wilson was of course formerly with Nottingham Forest and left them less than a year ago after the summer 2025 transfer window to become the Newcastle United Sporting Director.
For Premier League clubs looking to sign players, the deadline is 11pm tomorrow (Tuesday 1 September 2026).
The Northern Echo add though that their understanding is that Matthias Jaissle is keen to keep Jacob Murphy with so many older experienced players having left already this summer.
Murphy is now 31 and the report says has only one year left on his contract.
If he does stay at St James’ Park, Jacob Murphy will complete ten seasons with NUFC next summer.
He started the League Cup win over West Brom, whilst in the Premier League coming off the bench to replace Anthony Elanga against Liverpool and Yoane Wissa against Tottenham.
Everton were claimed to have interest in signing Jacob Murphy earlier this summer and I am guessing largely a case of what the player himself wants to do, especially if he is promised more game time elsewhere.
For Matthias Jaissle and Newcastle United, any departure will surely only make sense if it helps allow them to bring in one or more targets of their own. Newcastle’s squad still doesn’t have great strength in depth in certain areas.
