Barcelona 7 Newcastle 2 – Wednesday 18 March 2026 5.45pm

Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘For three halves of football you could definitely argue we were the better team…and look at that final score!

We were blown away in a ten minute spell at the beginning of the fourth half.

I honestly believe no one could have seen this coming at half time today, either Barca or Newcastle fans.

Maybe the penalty was the turning point, we’ll never know. What we do know is that the defending tonight was nowhere near good enough to get a result.

A positive that Elanga scored a couple of goals at Champions League level.

We move on to a massive match on Sunday where hopefully we defend better and put in a performance worthy of our first derby at home in 10 years, come on!!’

Simon Ritter:

‘Tired bodies and tired minds proved no defence, literally or figuratively, against a Barcelona team who outran and outplayed Newcastle United after a ding-dong first 42 minutes.

If you ever wondered what would be the outcome after two games a week for six months when then having to face a European giant, now you know.

The supreme effort against Chelsea four days ago was clearly a factor, with Gordon in particular lacking energy. Tonali still looked to be ill, the centre-backs were exposed time and again, the referee was lenient and favoured Barca overall.

Elanga was one bright spark in the first half but kept losing possession.

It could have been worse than the five-goal margin if Trippier had been sent off.

At least the referee blew the final whistle dead on 90 minutes, despite four minutes being indicated for stoppages.’

Billy Miller:

‘We were the better team for three halves of this tie.

Shame we didn’t come out of the dressing room for the last one.

The worst thing about tonight was every goal was avoidable. Slips, miskicks, lapses in concentration.

Massive reset needed for the weekend.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘In today’s modern football, we hear terms like the low block, the high press, the false 9.

So here is an old football term, we got our backsides warmeed, especially the 2nd half.

First half ( clutching at very thin straws here) I actually thought we were the better team.

So Edwardo of the Howe, our season now depends on (and I mean on) humping the village of the dammed on Sunday ‘

Jamie Smith:

‘At half time I would have been pleased with the run around we gave one of the world’s best teams.

As it stands, we’ve taking a hiding that can prove damaging.

There are mitigating circumstances, with those that were disgracefully unbooked in the first leg doing some damage tonight.

The inclusion of Trippier ahead of Livramento may be the critical error, given the decisive injury time pen.

Overall, more extremely poor defensive moments were a definite factor in this defeat, irrespective of the final margin. Slips were unfortunate but decent defence of the free kick and no brain pumps for Trippier, might have set the second half up very different.

As it stands, the second half was an embarrassment that really isn’t on. I’m now concerned about the damage it may have done to confidence ahead of Sunday.

If you search hard for positives, perhaps we may be able to salvage a place in a European competition where we are less likely to be on the wrong end of decisions, without the distraction of further midweek adventures. Never mind eh.’

David Punton:

‘Hope turns to despair as our Champions League journey comes to an end.

We’ve blown up. Collapsed. Capitulated. Been outclassed.

Simply not good enough against this Barca side in the second half, who have ended up running riot.

It had looked like there was a sniff of achance – and credit to Elanga for the two goals. He needed that.

Sadly, we’re on the end of a drubbing, but no major disgrace given the level we’re at and the sheer volume of games we have played.

While it’s a case of congratulations to Barcelona, the tie has exposed an issue, in my humble opinion, with so called big team bias. The Catalan side got away with a few fouls that really ought to have been bookings – but no matter.

We now have to focus on the next one.

Europe is punishing – a lot of games – but the manager has to get a reaction in the local derby.

A very tough night for us – but a great away trip nonetheless. ‘

Matt Busby said…:

‘Chastening.

For three quarters of this tie, we more than held our own, but after some comedic defending in the first forty five minutes at the Nou Camp, the warning signs were there and those frailties were brutally exposed by a rampant Barcelona after the interval.

Whilst this is a hugely disappointing way to exit Europe’s premier competition, let’s not forget what it takes to get to the last 16 of the Champions League, and by that I mean needing to finish in the top five of Europe’s toughest league, something Eddie Howe has accomplished twice in his short tenure at the club.

Salvaging something from our season now depends on our final eight league matches, starting Sunday against you know who.

Lets hope conceding seven goals for the first time since defeat at the Emirates in December 2012 doesn’t lead to an implosion on Sunday. I’m assuming it won’t. ‘

GToon:

‘That’s what a team built on years of cheating and corruption can do, while we have to pretend to be poor.

They outplayed us for a half in the two games and scored four in that half.

Players falling over, ball through legs, suicide passes in defence. A terrible half.

But we’ve earned a lot of money to improve us in the league that really counts.

Sunday is worth 10 Barcelona games to me. I’m really not bothered about tonight’s game, to the extent that my wife had to check the score as I seemed quite ok and not threatening to break anything or anyone. Oh well.’
