Spurs and Newcastle United met one week into the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Matthias Jaissle and his players walking away with all three points.
Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa with the goals, as United won yet again away at Spurs. A 14th time in the Premier League era.
Roberto de Zerbi and his players losing their opening home match, which followed up a 4-0 thrashing at Brighton.
Newcastle United are now unbeaten in all four matches so far this 2026/27 season, in Premier League and Carabao Cup.
Spurs were lucky to pick up their first Premier League point of the season on Saturday, not a single effort on target as they scrambled a goalless draw at Forest. Roberto de Zerbi’s team yet to score in a league match this season.
As a reminder, this is what happened this summer…

I have been interested to read the media reaction to the Spurs situation.
A crazy summer transfer window that saw Spurs spend an astonishing amount of money in transfer fees and wages in bringing in ten Premier League ready players who between them already had 47 years of experience at EPL clubs, yet Roberto de Zerbi allowed to get away with spouting a load of nonsense about how it was unrealistic that this Tottenham team would be anywhere near ready to hit the ground running.
This is a manager who took over at Spurs during last season and this summer has been backed with an unbelievable amount of cash and paying huge over the top Premier League premiums for ten signings, yet he comes out with this nonsense…
Matthias Jaissle took over at Newcastle United 18 days before United’s 2026/27 season kicked off, NUFC having lost most of their best players and then this summer signing nine players aged 24 or under, eight of who have only just arrived in the Premier League. The only exception is Nico Gonzalez who had started 26 Premier League matches for Manchester City.
If Matthias Jaissle and Newcastle United had started the season like Roberto de Zerbi and Spurs have, there would have been zero mercy shown by the media, despite such a summer of upheaval on Tyneside.
What Matthias Jaissle has achieved in such a short space of time is unbelievable in my opinion.
Unbelievable is also the perfect description for the excuses put forward by Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi…
