BBC Sport have been looking forward to the 2026 World Cup finals and the England squad.
Phil McNulty is the chief football writer at BBC Sport and he has given his considered opinion on which 26 players he would pick, if Thomas Tuchel wants any advice.
Two uninspiring friendlies against Uruguay and Japan haven’t really helped the selection process.
Unless I suppose you are talking about certain players who may have convinced Thomas Tuchel that they shouldn’t go.
So what does the BBC Sport main man advise…
The BBC Sport chief football writer’s preferred England squad, Phil McNulty giving this guidance to Thomas Tuchel when it comes to which 26 players to take to the world cup finals:
GOALKEEPERS:
Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, James Trafford.
DEFENDERS:
Reece James, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Tino Livramento, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Nico O’Reilly, Lewis Hall.
MIDFIELD:
Jude Bellingham, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Declan Rice, Adam Wharton, Kobbie Mainoo.
FORWARDS:
Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, Cole Palmer, Danny Welbeck, Jarrod Bowen.
From a Newcastle United perspective, the BBC Sport journalist picking Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.
I think Thomas Tuchel will take those three plus Dan Burn. I will be loving it, seeing the Big Lad from Blyth living the dream.
I can’t see any others from United competing for a place, the likes of Harvey Barnes or keepers Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale.
Interested as well to see Craig Hope of The Mail giving his preferred England team to start this summer:
Pickford; James, Guehi, Maguire, Hall; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane (Still not sure that eleven gets beyond a quarter-final)
I wouldn’t disagree very much with that suggested team and I definitely would have Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon in my England eleven.
