Seven journalists have selected the England squad that they would each select as the one to go to the 2026 World Cup finals.

All seven have chosen a number of Newcastle United players in each of their preferred selections.

The final England squad get together before the end of this league season is fast approaching.

Thomas Tuchel will on Friday unveil the players that he has selected for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

England playing Uruguay on Friday 27 March, then Japan on Tuesday 31 March.

Ahead of that, the seven journalists from The Athletic have each chosen what their England squad of 26 players would be for these 2026 World Cup finals.

Detailed below are the Newcastle United players selected by each of the journalists, plus any relevant comments:

Nick Miller:

“Obviously Jordan Pickford is still No 1, and [as well as Dean Henderson] the only other choice is between Newcastle team-mates Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale, and the current incumbent takes it.”

“I’ve been a Lewis Hall fan for a while so he would be my starting left-back.”

Carl Anka:

“Hall and O’Reilly mean Tuchel need not rely on Luke Shaw’s patchy health.”

Adam Crafton:

“In the goalkeeping department, the only debate is Ramsdale or Pope [as the third keeper], and given Eddie Howe watches them every day and selects Ramsdale, let’s go with him.”

“Stones aside, it is hard to look past Guehi, Maguire and Ezri Konsa, despite Tuchel’s crush on Dan Burn. I suspect Burn may be dealt with more harshly by international referees than he is in the Premier League (and maybe rightly so). At full-back, both James and Shaw do not have ideal injury records, so I have Livramento there as extra cover who can serve either position, and frankly is good enough to start too.”

Jack Pitt-Brooke:

“Left-back is still an open question but I’ve got O’Reilly, Hall and Livramento in my squad to choose from.”

“Gordon misses out. Maybe this is unfair on Gordon but in Rashford, Madueke and Eze we would have other options to play on the left.”

Stu James:

“Maguire and Burn — it was the toss of a coin (I went with international tournament experience, Maguire included but not Burn).”

“Full-backs — Livramento or Shaw: Livramento’s versatility won the day.

“I didn’t find room for Foden — I feel bad about that and maybe it’s a mistake. But, as with Watkins, form was a factor in that decision and I felt Gordon’s pace couldn’t be ignored.”

Rob Tanner:

“O’Reilly and Tino Livramento offer versatility.

“The big question could be what to do if something happens to Kane? Tuchel is likely to opt for a false nine with Gordon or Bowen operating in that role.”

Jordan Halford:

“Stones and Marc Guehi remain first choice, with either Hall or O’Reilly at left-back. Burn would be unlucky to miss out, but Maguire has never let England down in a major tournament.”

“Watkins and Gordon bring pace if required deep into games. Saka and Foden are my starters out wide.”
