The departure of Mike Ashley meant the return of Wor Flags to matches, as they ended their boycott almost five years ago now.
The pre-match flag displays once again becoming part of the matchday routine, starting with the first post-takeover match against Spurs at St James’ Park in October 2021.
Then ahead of the first home match of the 2022/23 season, Wor Flags invited all fans to consider helping them with future flag displays by setting up a regular monthly donation to assist in funding them.
Wor Flags last week informed Newcastle United fans about their next St James’ Park display.
Something very special for the first home match of the season when Liverpool visit St James’ Park.
Wor Flags message to Newcastle United fans about Kevin Keegan via their social media – 22 July 2026:
‘We’ll be paying tribute to the most important man in Newcastle United’s history at our season opener against Liverpool on Sunday 23 August. If you’d like to contribute to our display you can do so on our website.’
Wor Flags have now provided updates.
“Huge thanks to everyone that has donated so far. We’re looking to include the entire stadium in this so need as much support as possible, we have the plans in place, we just need the funds to ensure a fitting send off for the King.
“As part of our display on the opening day of our season we plan to involve every seat in the ground.
“Knowing how much King Kev means to the fans of both clubs, we’re also including the away end and have been in touch with @spionkop1906 (who organise flag displays at Anfield) as part of our planning.”
This will be class, a first as well, to involve every single seat inside St James’ Park, including the Liverpool away section.
I can’t imagine how much work will have to go into this from the volunteers who plan and put the displays in place, plus of course then tidy them away afterwards. The least the rest of us can do is help to finance it…
So if you are in a position to do so, please consider making a donation to Wor Flags to help support the special Kevin Keegan display at the Liverpool match, plus of course showing your support for all of their displays.

The Wor Flags ‘goal’ explained:
‘Our Goal
Wor Flags goal is straightforward – to create displays at St James’ Park that are worthy of this great club. We will achieve this in the following ways:
Hundreds of black and white hand-held waver flags
Larger custom design one and two poler waver flags
Large text banners featuring messages of support
Foils, surfers and custom tifos’
On behalf of everybody who visits The Mag, we signed up in summer 2022 to make a modest regular monthly donation to help fund Wor Flags and that is ongoing.
If you would like to join us and make a personal individual contribution, then please go to Wor Flags, where you can set up a monthly donation (from as little as £1 per month and upwards) to Wor Flags, or a one-off contribution.
