Marco Silva watched on as Fulham won 2-0 against Newcastle United.
A goal in both halves giving victory to the home side.
Fulham swapped places with Newcastle United, the pair having been level on points ahead of kick-off.
United ending the season in 12 place with Fulham one spot higher.
For Marco Silva this may well be his last ever game in charge.
He has declined to sign a new contract as his current one finishes at the end of June. The Fulham boss claimed to be set to replace the departing Jose Mourinho at Benfica this summer.
Marco Silva saying about this end of season victory over Newcastle United:
“We won, and we deserved to. More balance in the first half, second half much more in control, sometimes not on the ball, but much more control. Go back and see how many games we had more than 20 shots, and this game is just an example. After the 2-0, with the moments that we had, we should have scored more goals. We should be more clinical, because it’s what makes you to win football matches, what makes you to be ruthless in the league that we are playing in, the level that we are playing.”
Marco Silva adding…:
“Against a [Newcastle United] side, I don’t want to compare, but when I look at their substitutions and I see players from the eleven go out, 60, 70, 80 million [pounds], and players to go in, 60 and 70 million [pounds], it just speaks about sometimes the difference on the paper that is there.”
The Fulham boss getting a little bit carried away.
The Newcastle United team and squad may have cost more than Fulham’s but United have never paid £70million for a player, never mind £80million. Nick Woltemade is the club record signing at £69milliion (including potential future add-ons) and then Alexander Isak at £63million is the next highest ever NUFC buy. The likes of Tonali, Elanga and Wissa next highest, all of them around £55million each, including potential add-ons.
Plenty of the Newcastle United players in the team and on the bench today had cost very modest transfer fees, if any fee at all. Pope £10m, Burn £13m, Alex Murphy £0, Jacob Murphy £10m, Neave (pictured below on his Premier League debut off the bench) £0, Osula £15m, Ramsdale £4m loan fee, Ruddy £0 and Trippier £13m.
Marco Silva going on to say:
“I think this afternoon was an important one. It was important to give the fans back something and for them to have this good feeling, for us to thank them in the end of the game with a lap of appreciation, in the best way possible. And I think they really enjoyed the afternoon, and is the reason why we were working so hard. Overall, it was a good performance from us, a well deserved win.”
The Fulham boss ending with:
“We showed throughout this season that this place was really the fortress for us. The home form and the away form was completely different, for the first time in four seasons. And even in some moments that were the most decisive moments for us this season at home, we deserved something more from the games that we didn’t get, and I believe the season could have been completely different, in the matter of more points for us, and competition for the European places. I’ve been telling you that the margins are so, so small at this level, and we are competing in the best league in the world, and the most difficult one, and of course all the margins and all the small details, they always play a big part.”
