Brighton bizarrely claim cheated by match officials in 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United

It turns out that Brighton are believing they were cheated by the match officials on Saturday, blaming them for the defeat to Newcastle United.

United won 3-1 with goals from William Osula and Dan Burn in the first half.

Hinshelwood pulling it back to 2-1 on 61 minutes, before Harvey Barnes finished things off in added time after coming off the bench.

I was totally unaware of any ‘controversy’ but apparently the Seagulls unhappy with two incidents.

A belief they were denied two supposedly clear penalties by the match officials in the final five minutes of normal time, when the score was 2-1 to Newcastle United.

On 86 minutes it was Pascal Gross who was in the penalty area and had his back to goal, he turned and from a couple of yards blasted the ball at Malick Thiaw’s arm which was down by his side.

The rebound then saw Charalampos Kostoulas with an excellent overhead kick and an even better save from Nick Pope.

Pascal Gross not happy though, speaking to local Brighton media, he told The Argus: “I think it’s a penalty…because when I shot the ball he [Malick Thiaw] blocked it with his arm and, if he had not, it would have gone in. I don’t understand why we didn’t get a penalty.”

All a bit feeble for me, as I say it was blasted at Thiaw from point blank range and his arm wasn’t in an unnatural position.

That was on 86 minutes and only three minutes later, those associated with Brighton claiming more injustice.

Rutter hit a low cross from the left and Yankuba Minteh at the far post blasted it over the bar.

However, Brighton moaners claiming that this incident should also have seen a penalty awarded. This is due to a supposed spot-kick offence from Dan Burn who tried to clear the low cross and as he did so, Kostoulas falling to the ground.

Another weak and desperate argument for me from those associated with Brighton.

I don’t believe either incident was close to a penalty and clearly the on the pitch referee and the VAR didn’t think so either.

These are the brief highlights from the Brighton match and if you go direct to 1.43 you can judge for yourself on both incidents.

Newcastle United have seen some woeful decisions go against them this season from match officials and thankfully that tally wasn’t added to on Saturday.
