ONE BAD DEFEAT — AND SUDDENLY NEWCASTLE UNITED ARE A CLUB IN "ALARMING DECLINE"?!
Martin Samuel has taken aim at Newcastle United in his latest column for The Times, questioning the club's new direction following Monday night's 4-1 defeat at Leeds United. His argument centres on Newcastle's summer rebuild, the sale of major players, the money spent on younger replacements and the appointment of Matthias Jaissle.
But has this gone WAY too far after ONE Premier League defeat?
Newcastle's performance at Elland Road was dreadful. Nobody should hide from that.
But Jaissle arrived only shortly before the season started, inherited a squad undergoing enormous change and had gone five competitive matches unbeaten before the Leeds disaster. Newcastle also had to deal with several injury problems and lost Nico González to concussion during the game.
So is it really reasonable to portray Newcastle as a club in serious decline already?

The pressure is now on Jaissle and his players to respond against Hull City at St James' Park.
