Newcastle United must now explore other avenues to sign players after failing to sign any players in the January transfer window.
From one perspective, the transfer window can be deemed a success after Newcastle United sold two players who had barely played all season for great fees. On the other hand, it can be looked at as a disaster when replacements were not signed.
Newcastle sold Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United and allowed Lloyd Kelly to join Juventus on loan with an obligation to buy. The Magpies will bag around £30m from both deals, which is a big help for PSR but a blow to their squad depth for the rest of the season.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell had pencilled in bids for several players in the summer, but they were snapped up by Manchester City in January.
While fans wait for the summer transfer window to arrive, Newcastle can begin talks with players in leagues outside of England whose contracts are expiring in the summer.
Newcastle also have eight players out of contract at the end of the season including first-team regular and Eddie Howe favourite Fabian Schar.
Here are four players Mitchell can begin talks with today.

Jonathan David
LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David has enjoyed a stunning season in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. The 25-year-old has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season including six Champions League goals.
Newcastle are interested in David and even recently sent a scout to watch the Canadian play in France. There was also believed to be a scout in attendance for Lille’s defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League last month.
David has scored 104 goals for Lille since signing for the French outfit in 2020 – he has his fair share of possible suitors and would only be tempted to join the Magpies if they qualified for the Champions League.
There are believed to be “several Premier League clubs” after David, so Newcastle must present him with a compelling argument to get him to join the club.
Antonio Cordero
Newcastle looks to have already gotten the jump on this talent. Malaga winger Antonio Cordero has entered pre-contract talks with Newcastle and could be set for a summer move to Tyneside.
The 18-year-old has impressed in La Liga 2 this season, scoring four goals and bagging six assists despite Malaga’s struggles for results.
Cordero has already racked up 43 senior appearances after making his debut for the Spanish side in 2023. Nicknamed Antonito, Cordero spent his youth years at Sevilla and Real Betis before landing at Malaga.
The 18-year-old is also capped at under-19 level for Spain.
Leroy Sane
A more left-field option, but Newcastle need a quality winger. Bayern Munich ace Leroy Sane looks set to leave the German Giants upon the expiry of his contract in the summer.
The 29-year-old has played consistent first-team football this season, scoring five times in 16 appearances. Newcastle were linked to Sane in September with the claim that Howe was a ‘big fan’ of the German who won two Premier League titles with Manchester City.
It is unknown whether Sane would be open to the move to Newcastle or if the Magpies could afford the hefty wage bill that would see him on double what current highest earner Bruno Guimaraes earns.
Sane has proven that he can perform well in the Premier League, he scored 25 goals in 90 Premier League appearances during his time at Man City but struggled with injury problems.
Angel Gomes
Another Lille star, Angel Gomes has previous Premier League experience thanks to his time at Manchester United. Gomes ran his Red Devils contract down to join the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer in 2020. Five years later, Gomes looks to be doing the same thing at Lille.
The 24-year-old midfielder has played 13 Ligue 1 games so far this season and has played a part in the French club’s Champions League campaign, scoring once in four appearances.
Newcastle want Gomes who would be a great alternative option for Howe’s existing midfield trio of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Guimaraes.
The England interantional would prefer a move to Tottenham over Newcastle, however. Gomes was also part of the Lille squad that the the Trophee des Champions in 2021.
