We finally saw Yoane Wissa in a Newcastle United shirt for the first time this weekend, and what he said after the game suggests it was all worth the wait.

After the departure of Alexander Isak in the summer, the signing of Yoane Wissa was a big deal for Newcastle United.

The £55m former Brentford man was expected to be the leading light in the Magpies’ attack this season, but injury has stalled his progress significantly.

He finally made his debut against Burnley, though, and fans loved what they saw from Wissa. Now, his comments after the full-time whistle hint at one major positive we never thought of.

What Yoane Wissa said after Burnley game

Speaking to the press after his debut, Wissa was clearly very excited about making it onto the pitch versus Burnley for 15 minutes.

“It has been a long time coming,” Wissa told the BBC. “Over the last 11 weeks, I’ve learned about the team and the players. It has been a long road but I’m happy in the end.

“It gave me goosebumps [when I came on]. I’m buzzing now. It can be an excellent season because we have so many quality players.”

Newcastle fans let Wissa know how they felt with a chant directed his way, but if they’re reading these comments, like us, they may have spotted a hint at one surprising positive of his long absence.

The fact that Wissa has been able to get to know his teammates over the course of these 11 weeks is a massive bonus that many players are not really afforded. And that’s not the only positive…

Yoane Wissa has settled in without pressure

Coming in for £55m was always going to bring with it a degree of pressure for Wissa. It would for any player, but while we’ve seen the likes of Isak, Nick Woltemade, Benjamin Sesko, and Viktor Gyokeres judged instantly at their new clubs, Wissa has been able to fly under the radar.

For Newcastle fans, at least, there will be a period of adjustment given to Wissa after returning from his injury. Indeed, the very fact that he played this weekend was a huge boost for the Magpies supporters.

How much has Yoane Wissa endeared himself to Newcastle United fans already?!

He’s not even kicked a ball yet and it suddenly feels even more exciting. How buzzing are you?

Interestingly, Wissa relishes the pressure of playing for Newcastle, but it’s always nice to have that bit of leeway he’s going to have for the next two or three weeks while he’s getting up to speed.

Obviously, Newcastle fans, Eddie Howe, and Wissa himself would rather he wasn’t injured. But, they’re now out of the woods and looking ahead to a more positive spell for the forward, and it can only be good news from here on out.
