If Newcastle United had any hope of signing Elliot Anderson, they can probably assume that dream is over now that Man City are keen.
The Newcastle United academy graduate was sold last summer in an attempt to appease PSR restrictions, with Nottingham Forest essentially bagging the midfielder for £15m (after the move of Odysseas Vlachodimos for £20m in the opposite direction).
If Newcastle United were to make ONE signing in January? Who would you hope it is? Comment below
Since then, Elliot Anderson has proven himself to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, and Newcastle unsurprisingly want him back.
The chances of Newcastle signing Anderson rely on the Magpies’ financial situation and their progress towards challenging for the top spots in the league. Those challenges are hard enough, but now it seems the race could be over before it has even begun.

Newcastle United fans hate the idea of Elliot Anderson joining Man City
The problem is, Man City now want Elliot Anderson. It is thought Pep Guardiola’s side are ready to make an £80m move for the Nottingham Forest man, which would blow Newcastle out of the water.
Reacting to this update on Twitter/X, Newcastle fans have not taken the news well and they’re naturally gutted about the fact their former star is now seemingly out of reach.
One fan wrote: “Should have taken the points deduction rather than sell Minteh and Anderson.”
Another added: “Not blaming anyone, not Eddie or anyone, but just think what would or could have happened if Elliot Anderson would have gotten some actual opportunities at Newcastle.”
A third said: “£15 million we sold him for. This wouldn’t have needed to happen if we were better in our recruitment department.”
Whoever is to blame for losing Anderson for that fee and what has occurred since, Newcastle supporters clearly think the club made a big mistake.
Others replied, “Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell messed up big time if Anderson ends up elsewhere,” and “Should have done what City did with James Trafford and included a buy-back clause with the option of us getting first dibs.”
Now, it might be too late to even think about bringing Anderson back to Tyneside.

Elliot Anderson transfer race is over if Man City make their move
Newcastle sources already said signing Anderson would be difficult, but if City are genuinely ready to make an £80m move, the deal may as well already be done.
To be fair, though, bringing Anderson back would be financially irresponsible for Newcastle. They’d essentially be taking a £65m hit in terms of PSR with the disparity between the fee they sold him for and what they may have to pay to re-sign the midfielder.
That kind of shift in terms of PSR would be disastrous for Newcastle, who are already close to the limit anyway.
Imagine a world where Newcastle United are FORCED to sell one player in January. Who should it be? Let us know!
When Man City want a player, they more often than not get their man. Newcastle should take the hit, move aside, and look at other, more realistic and affordable targets.
Scott McTominay is open to joining Newcastle and would cost just £50m. With the January transfer window just around the corner, the Magpies should line that deal up and not waste their time on Anderson.
