Who is Jason Tindall?
Jason James Tindall is a professional football coach who works for Newcastle United.
Tindall began his career in coaching before his playing days were even over at Weymouth, when he became a player-coach before hanging up the boots.
He would then link up with Howe at Bournemouth in 2009 and, other than an eight-month period after leaving the Cherries, they have worked together ever since.
Was Jason Tindall a footballer?
Yes, Tindall was a footballer before entering the world of coaching and enjoyed a career that spanned over 10 years.
After spending time on Arsenal’s books, he climbed through the ranks at Charlton Athletic as a midfielder before being released. He joined Bournemouth on a free transfer and became a defender, making over 150 appearances for the Cherries in eight seasons.
However, persistent knee problems scuppered his career and he saw out his playing days at non-league side Weymouth.
Tindall briefly pulled back on the boots for Bournemouth when he was registered as a player while coaching the side with Howe, making two appearances three years after his last game.

Jason Tindall and Eddie Howe
Howe and Tindall first met as teammates at Bournemouth years ago and grew to become friends and close work colleagues.
Tindall actually got a coaching role at Bournemouth before Howe, working as an assistant coach, but was let go when his manager was sacked. However, Howe quickly brought him back into the fold when he got the job.
The duo became the youngest managerial partnership in the Football League, saved the Cherries from relegation out of the EFL and then got them climbing up the divisions.
They briefly left the south coast for Burnley but returned nine months later after Howe didn’t settle at Turf Moor. They would stay at Bournemouth for eight years, establishing them as a Premier League side.
When they were eventually relegated in 2020 and Howe departed, Tindall replaced his friend but lasted just four months before getting the sack.
Tindall spent a brief spell at Sheffield United before linking back up with Howe at Newcastle.
Jason Tindall ‘Mad Dog’ nickname
Thanks to playing the ‘bad cop’ in his dynamic with Howe over the years, Tindall has picked up the nickname ‘Mad Dog’.
Howe even admitted he calls it him, too, in 2023: “I have heard he gets called ‘Mad Dog’ and I’ve started calling him it too!
“We have good fun in the coaches’ room about all of these things. I’m not on social media but I get sent a few things.”
When asked about the monicker in 2024, Tindall laughed: “It’s stuck anyway. It’s been there for a while, there’s obviously a lot of memes going around and things I get sent from time to time.
“It’s all in good humour. It’s fine, no problem.”
Jason Tindall controversy
Tindall is probably the most recognisable assistant manager in the Premier League and has had plenty of controversial moments on the sidelines.
Tindall has shared heated words with Mikel Arteta but his most notorious run-in was with Unai Emery in December 2024.
Tindall was sent off after an altercation with Emery in the tunnel at half-time of the match.
The pair also had a run-in the previous season when Tindall ‘sushed’ him and then said Emery refused to shake his hand.
Speaking in 2024, Tindall said on his fiery disposition in the dug-out: “I don’t care if I upset people.
“I’m not going to stop being me. It’s not deliberate. I won’t stop being me all of a sudden because of what people say about me and what they tell me to do.
“If anyone thinks that’s going to stop me being my real self, that’s not going to happen. Listen, I don’t mean to get under the skin of opposing managers or deliberately upset anyone.
“All I’m interested in doing is helping Newcastle win matches. Once kick-off is there, that’s my only motivation.
“My goal is to do everything in my power to help the team. If that upsets a few people along the way, then so be it.”
What Newcastle games has Jason Tindall managed?
In April 2025, Tindall took temporary charge of Newcastle managerial duties after Howe was hospitalised and diagnosed with pneumonia.
Tindall was in charge as Newcastle smashed Manchester United 4-1 thanks to a Harvey Barnes brace and goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
He will also manage fixtures against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
